I was mountain biking last night and the sun was setting so I decided to bail out before it was completely dark. I whip out out my button compass and map. and my compass was not working. Thank God for the sun setting so I had an idea what direction to head.

However did my metal tools in my back pack demagnetize my compass? Do I need a better quality compass? did I store it improperly?

can someone help me with this, so I can avoid this in the future

Thanks

Without knowing all the circumstances, and the things you tried to correct the problem, it's tough to say.

I will add that a mountain bike, if made mostly of a magnetic or aluminum frame, will definitely be able to throw off a compass. They are pretty sensitive.

My general recommendation, which you may have tried, was to walk away from the bike about six to ten feet to take your measurement. They can be that touchy.

might of had too much shock from biking..is it liquid filled? I never put to much trust in one of those button models. you might want to get a good liquid filled compass that has a dial lock so vibration dont kill it. also could of been the metal frame like stated before. any little bit of steel will throw one off easy.

If your wanting to continue with a small compass like that. Then get a Tru-Nord from trunord.com. Best little compasses of that type made.
