Hi folks,

I love my Izulas, but recently, for some odd reason, Esee has begun shipping knives with a 'clear' sheath. It is not clear, it is bright WHITE. It is made of plastic. I would like to change the color. I tried the old tea soak but to no avail. Can that sheath be dyed in any way? If so, how?

Try dyeing it with "rit" dye. I have never tried it on a knife sheath, but it works great for plastic lacrosse heads. You can get it at walgreens, hardware stores, or craft stores.

I would like to dye it black or some dark color. I am not sure how to go about Duracoat. The Rit I can handle. I have never dyed anything plastic with it, though. Any suggestions as to how to go about it? I am afraid if the water is too hot it may ruin that plastic sheath.

I will have to think more about how to keep the sheath from being ruined. If worst comes to worst, you could probably just dye the sheath with the knife in it, as the water would likely be under 200 degrees F.

Just did some poking around. Dylon makes cold dye, but I don't know if it will work with plastic. Its worth a shot though...

Boiling shouldn't hurt the sheath as long as you don't squeeze it while its hot. I would tie a string through one of the attachment holes on the sheath and dip it that way.

Wow they come with white sheaths now? That's a bummer..... Why on earth would they do that :foot:

If it's dying, just shoot it and put it out of it's misery.
Krylon makes a spray paint for plastics.

Are you sure that its not just a mistake, a production error ? I don't see how white plastic would be cheaper than black plastic and nothing on their site indicates that they changed sheaths. Did you try contacting them, they have good customer service

I don't know a bunch about ESEE, but that looks like a non-standard color Izula, so maybe the sheath came that way on purpose?

Either way, scuff it up, and spray it with Dura-coat is probably the best solution, or hydrographic dipping. Cheapest would be to get a sheet of kydex in whatever color you want and make a new one, or try the spray paint for plastic and see how it holds up.

It is one of the new colors being offered and the clear (white) sheath is a standard offering and can be purchased separately.

So I emailed ESEE yesterday and asked about the white sheaths. They said that they are only being shipped with the pink and purple Izulas. All the others come with black. They didn't say why there was a change tho

Thanks for the info, and maybe it has to do with the color contrast? Back on topic... Doc, have you been able to figure out a way to dye it or spray-paint it?
