Hi all

whats the steel used in the old timer fillet and the uncle henry fillet?
Which is better or am i better off with other brands for filleting knives?

also whats staglon? is it plastic?

Its very confusing. thanks

Are you asking about the original OT and UH's or the new made in China stuff?
I believe the USA made Uncle Henry 167 Steelhead with the Staglon (derlin plastic, made to look like stag) handles was 440A steel. It has a moderate flex, holds an edge very well, and is fairly easy to sharpen. I don't know what steel was used in the later Old Timer 147-146 knives with the Safe-T-Grip handle but they don't seem to hold an edge as well as the 167 and are prone to get deep rust spots if put away wet.
If you want to know more about a specific model, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi thanks for your reply. I am referring to those that can be bought off ebay. Those are probably newer versionsmade in china. Perhaps I should be looking at other brands.

Both the original Schrade U.S.A. and the new Chinese copies can be found on eBay now. If there is any doubt as to which you are looking at, ask the seller. As far as I know, none of the Imperial branded fillet knives are being reproduced yet. Neither are the Schrade Graflex knives. Or the folding fillet "Mighty Angler" knives.

Codger- they are reproducing the Ma folding fillet and the imperial fillet I accidntally bought one of the chineese imperials. and if ya search the folding ma under schrade fillet knives they come up all day for $25 bucks packaging looks like the old stuff on some of them too. - just a waring- Joel

Well, shows to go how much I know about what is being imported these days. :o

Ahhh... I too almost got burned by a bogus Mighty Angler. It did seem odd to see so many available all of the sudden. You have to look closely at the tang stamp, even if it's a bad picture, if it is only one line it is probably not a USA made Schrade.

Here's my original MA5 that accompanies me on my fly fishing trips:

There's a new old stock MA5 fillet knife on the shelf at a local hardware store here priced at 43 dollars. Is this one I should run over and get? Thanks, Dan

If you want one you should consider it. They always sell for more than that on Ebay anyway.

Hey magicmarker- I would recommend getting the knife for $43 bucks. good knife and good price. If you dont want it go get it and I'll buy it from ya.- Joel
