Ok well after reading up on some books and threads i have decided i would like to build a forge.:)

Now here is my idea for a forge and was wondering if you all wouldn't mind helping me.

1.Dig up an area about in the ground about 2 feet deep and 2 feet wide. This would give me enough room to do any knife that i would like i think.

2. Line the dug up square with bricks.

3. Connect a pipe that is connected to the air source to one o f the bricks; a hole in one brick.

Now here come my questions::)

1. Would i have to worry about the bricks cracking since they have the heat on one side and the coolness of the earth on te other?

2. What should i line the bricks with to make sure this does not happen?

3. Would i have to worry about the pipe to the air source heating and then warping?

Alright well thats all i can think of right now. So any comments or ideas on my theoretical set up would be much appreciated.

My guess is it would be REALLY inefficient to run, and almost impossible to control the atmosphere of.

I'd follow one of the examples on Darren Ellis's page and make a cheepie out of some Inswool, Satanite, and an old metal tube (like this one):

Jay Cutter's Forge

Here's the link to Darren's page:

Ellis Custom Knifeworks

I looked at the first link and it seems that the heat would make the tube flimsy. Am i correct in saying that?

And about my idea being hard to control, i understand what your saying. Well i'm young and have loads of time to learn.:)

Steel would be better, but if you don't have it, Aluminum will work. It is insulated from direct heat by the refractories, so it doesn't get to melting temp.

Another problem with this idea is that your back will hate you for having an underground forge! I'm assuming you mean for coal or charcoal?

It would work, but it wouldn't be much fun! I can think of at least a dozen better ideas that arent much harder, or more expensive to build.

Could you point me in the direction of these other forge ideas? Thanks:)

Rededge, Email me 52100@ysforge.com, and I'll try to find all the old info I put together on the forges I've built. I had a lot of it online before my site crashed and died last dec. but now I'll have to see how much made it through the several computers I've had since I uploaded it all initially.
