Some one asked me for a gardening knife. He says he likes to use a knife for light pruning. (Seems weird to me too, but hey! He likes knives.)

What the heck would that look like? I googled it and found a Hori Hori, but that looks like it's more for digging than pruning.

I'm thinking a short stubby, fit-in-your-hand handle so it's easy to maneuver inside a bush. Maybe a 3-4" convex blade, but I dunno. Should it have a long flat edge? Big belly? Wharncliffe? Guard?

Ideas?

This is what I think of when I hear pruning blade. Also known as a hawkbill.

I've had two gardeners want a knife for pruning flowers. I did a kiridashi with the chisel grind on the opposite side then standard for their dominant hand. This is because they would use it much like a paring knife, cutting back towards the stem held in the knife hand. They love them.

Of course! Thanks guys.

Kevin McGovern Kevin McGovern Good idea on the chisel grind.

I'll have to practice grinding an inside curve. I imagine I can do it with a 3 or 4" wheel holding the blade vertical then twisting as I pull (if that makes sense).

yes this makes sense. Grinding an inside curve can be tricky. One more reason I like a kiridashi for this task.
