Sorry for all the pics, just wanted to give plenty of angles and shading.
The etching is pretty corroded away but hopefully someone has seen it before and can shed some light as to the maker and or age.
I've looked everywhere I know to look and can't find a similar makers mark.
It was in an old tool box at work and the boss said I could have it, so I made a handle out of the bottom half of a broken axe handle and use it while camping sometimes.

Thanks in advance.

All I can really tell you is that it's actually a riggers axe, and not a carpenters hatchet. ( these were often used by framers, before someone got the bright idea to weld claws onto it thus inventing the framing hammer )
If you have a grease pencil or a white crayon you can fill in the stamp to make it easier to read.
They you may be able to identify it. The 2 words on top are what matters.

I was just waiting for Steve to ID it. I knew he'd come along eventually. Nobody recognizes old stamps like Steve Tall.

Thanks again, my friend.

It was just the circle and square combination that I thought I had seen before, so I searched the forum for:

circle square

and found a photo of the stamp in one of the listed threads I had previously posted to. The search function of this forum is pretty valuable, in my opinion.

Man that's awesome ! I'm definitely a fan of Vaughan tools.( though I only have 3 )
PLEASE !!!! clean it up with a wire wheel and flatten the burred edges back down with a ball peen hammer ( I'd use a Vaughan if I had one :D ) , because that thing definitely has a story to tell and patina talks :thumbup:

Again thanks, I would never have thought to do a search for circle square.:o

Thanks HnS,I do happen to have a Vaughn BPH and will hammer vs grind the burrs.
Too bad about the chips in the head, but it works for tent stakes and kindling.

I've seen that very hatchet before. In fact, as recently as this morning. :D Good searching man.

Bob

I quickly linked that photo from another thread, and just now noticed the URL:

I would have given some attribution, if I was paying more attention. oops. :foot:

The best part is that you don't have to worry about what you hit with it because you have an actual hammer ,and you just never K of what you may need to pound on.

I understand, I was not fishing, just making a joke. For whatever reason though, I really did pick up that hatchet this morning to look at the trademark. Later I read this thread for the first time. The mark in the OP looked like mine and I thought about posting that picture for comparison. Then I got down to your post. Went to my files and sure enough it was mine. I was amazed that you could find that picture! Hope it helped the OP.
