I can't seem to get my izula razor sharp like it was I'm using a spyderco sharp maker and nothing my rc-4 is still a scary sharp blade even after a 5 day survival trip testing the knife out. I can get all my other brand of knives super sharp but not the esse is it the 1095 steel or just me I'm using the gray med sticks and fine white sticks set at the 40deg 20 per side even tried back beveling at 30 any help would be great

Have you tried using the sharpie method? The sharpmaker should sharpen the izula no problem. I have sharpened 2 izulas to hair whittling edges. You can achieve a clean shaving edge off the brown rods.

Here is a post I made regarding sharpening the izula with the sm. The thread can be found here:

I was not impressed with the factory edge, was barely shaving sharp. The tan Izula was uniformly shaving sharp. I know this happens from time to time with every manufacture since most are done by hand. This is not an issue for me since I sharpen all my knives when I get them anyways. I forget how easy it is to sharpen 1095!

My sharpening system consists of a sharpmaker with UF rods and a strop loaded with Chromium Oxide. I also have an edge pro if I need to do any reprofiling. To my amazement, the Izula worked perfectly with the Sharpmaker at the 40º. I'm sure the 30º setting would work too, but I figured I rather have a more durable edge for this knife.

I always start using the sharpie method.

We can see that at the 40º setting we are hitting the very edge.

Perfect if you ask me!

Sorry for the "ok" pictures. My Point and shoot has a joke for macro function so I use my mobile phone "Nexus One" and use my 10X loupe as the macro lenses. I think my phone works way better then my point and shoot...:D

Never tried the sharpmaker, I keep a good arm shavin edge with a lansky and touch up with ceramic rod.

I haven't tried the sharpie yet but will when I get home what am I looking for with it just where the blade makes contact with the stone?

You need to be getting results similar to my picture to actually sharpen the edge. If you aren't removing marker for the VERY edge like in the picture, you aren't sharpening the knife but messing with the bevels.

Ahh I see that helps me out alot I was trying to remove all the sharpie but it's just the edge wow I feel like a little child in school again Thank you for the help looks like when I'm off of work it's back to the sharpmaker :)
