hi everyone, i'm nick, and just joined this forum and have a bunch of questions, and i would like to extend my thanks beforehand for any help that can be given.

i recently took a part my chive to clean, after much debate because i wasn't sure how the difficult the speed safe would be to put back together, and it wasn't as difficult as i thought. i am pretty sure i put it back together exactly as it was before, but the blade is rubbing on one of the sides, which i think is preventing the blade from springing out all the way. can anyone with a similar knife describe how to fix it, or describe how to put it back together, in case i did do it wrong.

also i am very much a knife sharpening noob, and have read alot about the sharpmaster on these forums. i am thinking of getting one. is this the right one? i would like to sharpen my knife back to factory level, the blade is primarily used for cutting twine, rope, paper, boxes (and various other cardboards), and lots of tape. the blade isn't in bad shape now, but it doesn't feel same after i knicked it on cement and had it resharpened (unprofessionally).

i also like to keep my knives very clean, and i've noticed that when i clean them the lube that is put on ussually comes off. is there a specific product that i should use (inexpensive please), or is WD-40 or graphite OK? also my cleaning method is rather primitive; just take knife apart and wash parts with soap and water then rinse and dry. is this method harmful at all?

thank you for help and time,
-nick

Off center blades seem to be a problem for a lot of speed safe knives. This was in the reply i recieved from kershaw reguarding this problem.

Dawn,

This is a common trait with the speedsafe knives, Unfortunately the Torque from the Torsion Bar pulls the blade to one side.

This is a conversation between 2 kershaw employees reguarding my knives. They did say that I could send my 3 off center speedsafes in to be looked at.

Welcome to BF! Yes, that is the right sharpening system. As for the blade-off-center problem, try to tighten or loosen the blade pivot screw untill the blade is centered between the handle. I use 3-in-1 oil on my knives because it is a little thicker than WD-40, but that works to. The way you are cleaning your knives is just fine, as long as you get all of the water out (especially with speed safe knives, as they have more openings for water to get trapped in) and dry the knife as soon as possible, then reapply oil to the moving parts and put a light coating on the blade if you aren't going to use it for awhile. Hope this helped.

Rather than water and/or taking them apart, I wonder if you couldn't just blow them out with Gunscrubber, or maybe even just compressed air, depending, then give them a liberal shot of Tri-Flo or Boeshield T9, blow the excess out with compressed air, wipe it down and be done with it?

wow thanks for the help everyone. the blade is still off center a little, but no longer rubbing. BJE your suggestion for 3-in-1 oil did wonders, thanks!

i now eagerly await the arrival of my sharpmaster. again, thanks.
