Hello, I need advice. My husband passed away and I’ve discovered that he had been collecting all sorts of knives. Camp, Bowies, throwing, a dozen pocket/switch blades. He had a throwing vest as well, brand new. I don’t want them. I don’t know anyone else who would want them. Some are really beautifully crafted. I don’t have the emotional energy or time to sell them one by one.

Are there knife clubs or should I contact a forge? What can I do to get these where they’d be enjoyed/appreciated? Edit: I wound like to get something for them, I don’t even know how to price it though.

Thanks

Sorry for your loss.

At the risk of sounding like That Guy, be careful about asking specifically for the values of knives. Registered users ("free to plays" like you and me), aren't allowed to.

For information and advice on anything not value-related, Bernard Levine's crew:

Should be able to help.

And for help posting pictures, Rev has your answers:

I appreciate the advice, I’m not looking for this site to price any of them, I just didn’t know where to begin to move them on.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I would sincerely suggest you post pictures of them here first - that way we can at least tell you if you have something of value. Then you can decide if you want to upgrade your membership here and get into the details of what they may be worth.

You will need a pic hosting site. Imgur is good and free. Post your pics there, select your pics, and click the box for "message boards and forums". Paste that link here. It's quick and easy.

I would also suggest you stay away from pawn-shops, as they will a) most likely have no clue if you have something of value, or b) give you no where near what they may be worth, if they do know.

Join this Forum as a Gold Member, take individual photos of each knife front & back, learn how to post the photos on this site (most ppl here use imgur) and then ask for an id and price estimate for each.

Please do NOT post a group photo of 10-20 knives at a time and expect ppl to figure out what they are That's lazy and won't help your cause.

If there a lot of knives, just include a few in each post. There is no limit on how many "how much are these worth" postings that you can make.

There are a lot of very knowlegable knife ppl here who will provide you w/all the info you need about them.

Then based on the price estimates you get, you can sell them here on The Exchange. If they're any good, they'll sell fast, especially if you offer them at a discount from the estimates

The price estimates and ability to sell on this site are covered by a Gold Membership, which only costs $35 and is the cheapest way to get an appraisal of the knives and sell them anywhere.

You can learn the ins & outs of selling knives here later. There are certain rules that you must follow but it's not all that difficult, even though some pol can't manage to abide by them.

I have to disagree with sgt1372 above on one thing- taking group pictures of the knives (like 10 in a single pic) can allow identification depending on the knives, the quality of the pictures, and the knowledge of the people viewing the pictures.

Group pics will save the OP a lot of time and effort. And showing group pics is a good first step to let her know what type of knives she has, like if they are quality, or if they are cheap junk. And if there appears to be any gems amid the clutter, she could always go back and take better, individual pics of those. Pocket knives can be small, and several can easily fit into a single picture and still be identified.

She says that she doesn't have the emotional energy to sell them one by one, so she might not be willing to put the time and effort into photographing them one by one, and then going through the effort of posting all of those individual pictures.

I've taken a lot of knife pics, and posted a lot of pictures of knives on this forum using Imgur, and it can be quite a bit of work (stage knives, provide good lighting, take a decent pic, upload pics into computer, upload pics into imgur account, post pics into Bladeforums post). That can be a lot of work if you're photographing an entire collection. And it can take an emotional toll if we're talking about a woman going through her recently deceased husbands belongings.

I say- start with just a a few group pictures, and we can go from there. Group pictures might be enough.

And a Gold membership is $30. If you're interested in purchasing a membership Temp2022, you can read more about it by clicking "Paid Subscriptions" in the blue banner across the top of the screen. Clicking on that will only provide information, it doesn't commit you to purchasing anything.

Sorry for your loss. Where are you located? There could be the possibility of a member on here that is near you that may be willing to assist you. If you aren't worried about getting top dollar for them, look for an auction house in your area, they may be able to appraise the whole lot for you. If you do go to an auction house, you can always come back here, buy the gold membership and then ask if their appraisal is reasonable.

Take them to a local auction house and let them do the selling for you. They are usually above board, just check their reputation.
