I am expecting my Lansky Deluxe 5-stone sharpener any day now and wanted to know what angles you think I should use on my main knives.
Here is a list of what i will be sharpening. Thanking you for taking the time to do this for me (if anyone does-lol)
The angles are 17, 20, 25 and 30.
FIXED BLADES
Becker BK2
Becker BK11
Becker Bk14
Cold Steel GI Tanto
Gerber Prodigy
Mora Companion (Carbon steel)
My dull kitchen knives
FOLDERS
Kershaw Cryo
Spydie Tenacious
Boker Hyper
Victorinox Tinker
Ganzo Axis Lock
Kabar Dozier Hunter Folder
Buck 110

I would put a 20° on your hard use, 25 on really hard use and 17 on pocket folders.

This is a really simplified overview of what should work though. Tout best bet is to ask those who own the specific knives or at least brands/use/category. For the Spyderco knives I'd definitely go 17 though.

You may find that using the Lansky on longer blades doesn't work well. I suggest a diamond bench stone to back up your system.

If you haven't read the thread on the stones loading up take a look. My only advice there is to clean your stones very often.

I'm a Lansky user, and concur with strigamort... I can also verify the long blade issue...
Personally I don't use the 20 degree any more, just the 25 and 17.

I did use it when I was chasing the bevel... but now I'm just too lazy..

Whats the best way to clean them?

When I use mine, for the stones requiring oil (not the diamond or ceramic) I'll put a drop or two of oil and spread it on the stone with my finger. I'll work work one side at a time adding oil if needed. Before I go to the other side of the blade. I'll add more oil and rub the stone with my finger and then wipe it with a paper towel. I may do this twice just to ensure the stone is clean. I'll then add a drop or two of oil and work the other side. When I'm done with the stone I'll scrub it again with the oil and wipe it clean. This keeps the stones clean, they don't get loaded or glaze over. Occasionally I'll scrub them with bar keepers friend and flatten them with a coarse sic stone.

With a Lansky on longer blades you will have to keep moving the guide down the blade as you go. It will do the job.
