I'm looking to add a large fixed blade to my arsenal of knives.

The knife will be used for hiking, camping, light chopping, general outdoor activities and such. I will also always be backed up with one or two folders.

Here is the list I have narrowed it down to:

Cold Steel Outdoorsman
Camillus CQB
Becker Companion
Entrek Warrior
Busse Basic 5 or 7

What do you all think? Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Out of the ones you mentioned, I'd go with the Basic 7. If you're willing to shell out the extra cash though, you might consider the combat grade Natural Outlaw. I've been using one I got just recently for this exact type of stuff and it's working great!

Any time you put Busse Basics into the mix, your gonna have to get used to seeing the same answers to the question of: "which knife is best?"

Busse Basic 7 with no doubt whatsoever!;)

Enjoy your new Basic 7!

What is your budget? What is too big?

A Busse Basic 9 might be a better choice or, have you considered the Jerry Fisk inspired Becker camp knife?

That Becker camp knife is an awesome piece at its pricepoint.

If you are into bigger ticket items, let Trace Rinaldi fix you up!

Black Canvas Micarta handle
Blade Steel - A-8 tool steel with bead blast finish
Blade length - 6 1/2"
Overall length - 11"
Weigth - 14oz

I've used this knife all over the world (and I mean all over)

Mine has a black titanium carbonitride coating -- laughs at salt water ;)

I certainly have no problem trusting my life to this knife!

Thanks for the help guys... even though I think most of you are just copying and pasting the previous persons response :)

My budget is anywhere from $200 down, I don't like to buy cheap but I won't use it enough to justify more.

I really like the looks of the Outdoorsman and the CQB's, I stumbled across the Entrek's by pure accident and thought I'd throw it on the list.

I really like the idea of the Busse but I don't really like blade finishes.

I have looked at the becker's and was thinking about the Magnum Camp but it also has a blade finish.

Keep the suggestions coming, I'm not in a big hurry and I like researching knives ;)

For the money you are willing to spend I would suggest a Fallkniven A1 or the smaller S1. For $200 you are almost able to get both. The VG10 steel seems pretty darn good.

I sold my F1 yesterday and my S1 is up for sale now. I'm kind of tired of the "rubber" handles and want something else. Don't get me wrong, they're great knives and well worth every penny.

I know, the Cold Steel has a rubber handle but I like the Steel guard and butt, plus the knife just looks really nice.

This knife was actually inspired by Jerry Fisk, not Ed Fowler. Still a great knife at a great price.

You might want to take a look at Mineral Mountain: http://www.plan-a.org/mmhw/ The blades are parkerized-- don't know if you consider that a blade coating or not. They might have other finish options available. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Dozier knives yet either. For the price range you mentioned, he has some very nice knives.

You should take a look at the Greco Companion. This knife is truly heavy duty and the quality is excellent. Best of all, it's on clearance right now for $49.95 at bladeart.

Like some other people here I would also opt for the Fallkniven A1! Especionally for the money you cannot find any better knife! I myself own two A1's, two S1's and two F1's! I have one of them for everyday use and all three of them in my readily packed survival gear package that I will pick up when it is necessary to go! I've made many tests with all three of them and I'm with knives for more than 25 years and believe me,.......many knives went throug my hands, many good ones but also many bad ones! What I cant say to everyone of you is that I know no better steel that VG-1o! Incredibly edge holding, very aggressive and durable edge, easy to resharpen with a DMT (I have a DMT duofold coarse/fine also in my survival package, :) ). Depending on my needs I choose the one or the other.

Many people think that the A1 is too big and heavy and you cannot do fine work with it. I for my part think, that you can do everything with it if you have experience and if you know how to handle a bigger knife. I do everything with this knive, from cleaning game to chop down trees with a 10´diameter if necessary (and I really did!!) to preparing my meal in the wilderness, chopping firewood and also digging holes. No doubt, the lighter work could also be done with the S1 and especially with the F1, but I always want to be on the safe side, so if I could choose only one knife, I would take the A1 (besides my battle mistress, my Trailmaster San Mai III,....)!!!

Long time the Fallknivens were unknown here in Austria and I found them only by chance, and I was fascinatet from the very beginning. So I picked them up and when we (my friends and me) went out in the wilderness to make our trainings and evaluation of gear they were looking a lot on my Fallknivens and they were fascinated about the performance and that they resisted to every possible abuse without nearly NO DAMAGE AT ALL whilst some of my friends ruined or broke their blades: Now they also have at least their A1's and F1's and some of them also ordered the S1.

So if you look around for an all purpose knive, do yourself a favour and go to the A1!

greetings
Gerry;)

Thanks Kodiak! My grasp of names escapes me in the late night/early morning.
