I'm having trouble with the spring breaking in a knife I made. I heat treated it and then heated it with a torch until it was blue. It got to the blue color real fast. Does it heat up to fast with a torch? Do I need to hold at 700 deg. for a longer period of time?
The spring did work for a couple of days, and the small spring for the lock return is still working fine.
Thanks, Joe

Joe,
What did you make the spring out of? O-1 works well. You have to heat treat it like a blade, bring it up to 1500-1525 and quench it in oil, then clean it off so you can see the colors when you heat it with the torch. Heat it to a light blue and then your done. You can't adjust it after you heat treat it so have it at the arc you want.
Hope this helps
Chuck

The spring is made out of 1095. I heated to non-magnetic and quenched in 110 deg. oil. I cleaned it off and heated it with the torch and it only took a second or two to turn blue.
Thanks for your help.
Joe
