Hi, I recently broke the spring on my Leek, called Kershaw, got a replacement sent to me. Now, what tips or what not do you guys have?
Some info I need in particular:

-The hex sizes of the different screws
-Some sort of vissual that will show me the inside of the knife before I open it
-Any general tips or tutorials.

Thanks.

I don't know if this'll help but it's the inside of a Chive with assisted opening mech. should be similar.

As for the size Torx bit I'm not sure but if I pull out my Chive later I'll check and get back to you.

Hey T.E., that is a great picture set. Thanks. PS. It sure is amazing that they can fit that spring mechanism in such a thin space.

the larger screw, the pivot, is a Torx size T8. the smaller ones that hold the frame together are T6. hex keys won't work (don't strip 'em out trying!), but you can pick these torx drivers up at Sears for around 2 bucks apiece.

abe m.

With the # 6's, make sure you're exactly parallel with the long axis of the screw and that the torx driver is firmly seated before you start turning out the screw. If they're in there snug, and everything is'nt lined up and seated, you can strip them even with the proper tool. Been there :)

thanks for the advice, and pix. I had one more question that I forgot to mention in my initial post: do you guys recomend heat releasing the loc-tite? Last time i delt with loc-tite i just blasted it with a propane torch, but that would discolor and de-temper my knife. How or Should i heat the loc-tite?

you could try boiling it. people have tried that for flashlights. i dunno what that'll do to a knife though...

Just go ahead and try to replace the tension bar, then come back with any questions. It's probably easier than you think.

I took my leek apart to see how it works and to clean it. It wasn't that hard and I don't recall having any problem with breaking loctite bonds.

One thing to note: when I first reassembled the leek, the blade was a bit stiff and wouldn't open all the way on spring tension alone. I think I over-tightened it or introduced some dirt or grit into the movement. After lubing it up, opening it about 10 times and then waiting a few days, it was better than ever.
