Help with magnetized knife?

I was cutting some wire off of the back of an old subwoofer with my M16-12Z, and I accidentally smacked the magnet on the back of the speaker. Now, whenever I try to sharpen my knife, it gets coated with metal filings, and only gets moderately sharp.

Does anyone have some good advice on how to demagnetize a knife like this? It's not heavily magnetic, just enough to grab a fairly large pile of shavings.

You can get someone to degauss it for you. Most TV service centers have the proper equipment to do this.

Its a very simple operation and I would be surprised if they charged you much if anything to do this for you.

fuchikoma,
You won't hear me claim to be a scientist but I think that if you find a fairly strong magnet, and then pass/wave your knife's blade over this magnet's opposing field (to that of your exposed speaker's magnet), you should be able to demagnetize your knife.

Maybe I'm nuts, but it sure sounds good to me.
Give it a try. You've got nothing to lose.

If you have a machine shop around you, stop in there, it wont take five seconds for them to pass it through a demagnetizer and ill gaurantee no charge just talk politely to them and ask if they'll pass it over it for you. we have several at work and its very simple.

I bought a little demagnetizer to erase recording tapes. It is strong and works well. It must have been pretty cheap.

I was going to suggest you might patent it as the first refrigerator knife.

Hey,

I got the same question more than a year ago. Sucks, ain't it? It happened to my Sebenza. Anyways, here's a link to that thread. The bulk magnetic tape eraser worked for me.

I've demagnetized screw drivers just by hitting them on the vice a few times. It knocks the magnetic domains out of alinment.

It's hard to demagnetize using another magnet, you may just end up swapping the N/S polarity of the blade..

If you have a large AC motor around, like a floor buffer maybe.. Put the blade on the casing (near the windings) while it's on. If the field is strong, your blade will be back to normal in a few minutes.

Or, hold it on the edge of your display tube and activate the degauss function about 50 times.. ;-)

He leaves out the Iron, Silly...

Just like you leave out the titanium. You make it just like swiss cheese and the magentic field passes right through it without disturbing the Force...
