Hey blade smiths - I know many of you show your wares at Blade Shows and I am sure many of you use a roll to keep your knives in.

Does anyone have a picture / pattern / source for an inexepensive knife roll.

I don't have any knives over 5 inch in blade or 10 inches overall - so a dozen or so slots of the same length would do it.

Before I get out my Holly Hobby Sewing kit and try to make up one of my own - I thought I would turn to the experts.

If nothing comes to mind - what would you make your roll out of if you were me? Canvas? Duck Cloth? Adamantium? ;)

Any advice is welcome (Except from Rick Marchand - he has been sending me pics lately that not appropriate..... ) ;)

I made my first rolls for carving tools out of 4oz. weight cheap ebay oil tanned suede leather. Later I used the same rolls for knives going to the shows. Now I purchase knife cases and rolls, but the old fellows still get used for some knives. If you google "Knife Roll" you ill see that you can buy them cheaper than make them, now. The knife supply dealers sell them ,too. Most shows have someone with a table full of sheaths and rolls for almost nothing.

Here is a link to leather like I used.

To make one:
Take a piece of leather with the width three times the maximum knife length and as long as you ant the roll to be.
Fold the edge up1/3 the width. This is how you make the pockets and the flap. Start at the end, and stitch up the edge. Set a knife in the pocket, and mark where the next seam should be. Stitch it in. Now, stitch another seam 1/2" from that. Place another knife in the pocket and mark the next seam, stitch, second line of stitching, repeat to the end. The spaces between the knives allow the roll to roll up. You can make a test roll out of cloth to see how wide the spaces should be, but 1/2" is about right.
When done, add a piece of 1/4" wide suede about 24-30" long to the end of the roll. Fold it in half and sew it in the center of the pouch area at the end. When the roll is rolled up, wrap these ends around the roll and tie together. Use a piece of cord to find out how long the strip needs to be. Extra length isn't a bad thing.
To roll up, place the knives in the pockets, and flip over the flap. Roll up and tie securely. I don't roll unsheathed knives in these leather rolls anymore, as there is always a change of a poke-through. The "Bill's Custom Knife Rolls" are so padded and firmly hold the blades, that I do place knives in them unsheathed.

I will share this one he sent me:
