My manix 2 has pretty substantial lateral blade play in the closed position. I've tried tightening the two pivot screws on each side of the blade but neither of them budge in either direction.

I guess it's not really a problem, mainly an annoyance but for 85 dollars I think it should be tight. Is there any way I can fix this?

most knives i own seem to have lots of play when in the closed postion i think its just a side effect of a liner lock

Manix 2, not a liner lock.

Mine moves very little when closed... not at all when opened... what do you consider "substantial"?

Mine has slight blade play when closed, but absolutely none when open. If you're seeing enough looseness that there's play open and closed, I'd say get in touch with Spyderco and send that baby in.

Well damn. Will they send me a new knife or a refurb?

Also does anyone have an idea of the turn around time?

How much side to side play when locked open? We talking 1-2 mm movement? If so thats something I can find in ANY folding knife I've owned and handled if I look hard enough for it except my Sebenza. If you got substantial play when the blade is open then they will either fix it or replace it for you no problems. Turn around was less than 2 weeks total the last time I dealt with Spyderco warranty.

theres always going to be some movement depending on how much your pushing on it side to side. the handle will flex making it look like blade flex. id make shure your looking at it right before you send it in. best way to do that is to observe the gap and sides of the blade at the pivot. mines pretty tight but the blade can be pushed some back and forth in the closed position. i think its just the flexing in the handle and not a loose pivot. when opened i see only the barest amount of movement side to side and thats less than most of my dozen or so folders.all of which i consider tight to very tight.

I have 2 of them and neither has any blade play at all, open or closed. I would call Spyderco as suggested above.

You don't cut with the knife closed so I would not worry about it. I would at least make sure the pivot is tight before paying to send it off for a couple weeks. What does a little play hurt when closed? Does the blade hit the liners? That would be the only problem I can think of.

Out of curiosity, is your main concern the very little play when it's open, or the play when it's closed?

Also, I just checked mine and it seems to have the same amount of play when closed that you described, but none when open. Honestly, I just checked four of my knives with various locks and they all exhibit play when closed, but not open (these were two liner locks, a frame lock, and a slipjoint).

I guess I'm saying that a bit of blade play when closed seems to be pretty normal for a lot of folding knives. If it really concerns you, by all means, bring it up with Spyderco, but I have a feeling you're going to find the same problem with a replacement...

Just something to consider.

That is something you need to ask the only people that can give you a 100% straight answer. They may send the same knife back and tell you that it's normal and within spec (if it truly is not within spec you would get your knife fixed or a new knife provided it is not a sprint run).
Turn around time can take 1-4 weeks depending on scheduled shows and other activities.

That was the first thing that occurred to me.

I would say that the play is less than 1mm when open so it is pretty negligible. I'm not going to warranty it over something that minor since it doesn't matter if it moves when closed. Spyderco I'm sure has real issues to fix so I won't bother them with this. I just thought maybe it was atypical for it to move, but since it seems to be normal im not worried about it.

To the person who asked how I can tell if the blade is actually moving when closed - I can actually see the blade wiggle at the base where the washers are.

I would suggest adjusting the pivot tension. I'm not sure if they are loc-tite'ing screws. If they are try a little heat from a soldering iron or dropping the knife in boiling water for a few minutes.

There is a little Loc-tite on there, hair dryer works well too if one is not inclined to make knife tea (dinking blade in hot water).

Eh, what's it going to hurt? Steel and G-10.

You might dink something up.

If there is loc tite it must be something new as my S90V didn't have any. It would be good to have though and wouldn't surprise me after a certain video. The Manix 2 does have a bushing so it could possibly be cranked down as tight as it will go.

What are you going to mess up with some hot water?
