hey guys,
I have a double bit that has a markers Mark above the weight of 4.5. It's about a inch above the weight stamp and I can barely make it out. From what I can see it's the letters SMAF or SAMP with a small diamond under the letters and 4 4 4 under the diamond?

Gonna need a picture😉

Sounds like SMART'S 444, from James Smart, Brockville, Ontario.

The diamond stamp probably had a G inside it. YesteryearsTools says that "The mark DIAMOND G was acquired the Gardiner Tool Co. and then used by the James Smart Mfg. Co."

A similar stamp on a double bit:

Thanks Steve!!!....Could you estimate an age?

Beyond the information available at that YesteryearsTools page about James Smart Mfg Co, one indication of approximate age range could be the advertisements I found (using google books) for Smart 444 axes, with dates ranging from 1925 to 1954. It's difficult to pin down the year just from those stamps, and ads don't necessarily correspond to production years.
