I am getting a black finish Emerson Comander, for an EDC/SD knife and I just cannot decide between a Plain blade or a Combo Edge. For that matter I am not sure if I should get the black or the Satin finish blade, I need some help!!

What finish you get is no more than esthetics. If you like the look of the black, get it. I'd rather have a clean blade. The black will scuff up soon enough.

Normally, I would not recommend serrations unless you cut a lot of fibrous material, like rope or cardboard, and even there, a sharp plain edge should do fine.

But the Commander has that deep recurve, and I do like the way the serrations fit in on the reverse portion, leaving a good big belly with its plain edge. If you don't have any particular dislike for serrations, I'd say this is a good knife to have them on.

i would get a plain edge myself other than rope it cuts just as well and rope is debatable, easier to sharpen, looks better imho, and if ya ever sell it the PEs are more popular than CEs.

no offense meant esav...........

None taken. :) I generally prefer plain. I think a combo edge is a waste on most knives, especially with shorter cutting edges.

I was a combo edge nut untill I got my Benchmade 630, now I am really liking the look and use of an all plain edge.

I also jumped on the combo edge wagon many years ago. Aside from it being the new thing and looking scary I am not really sure why I ever bought the combo. Just young and impressionable I guess. Anyhow I vote for the satin and plain edge. It has been my experiance that the black coating chips and scrapes off. I have not seen too many applications where the black blade makes it a more effcient cutter. Unless of course you will be doing some type moonless night de-animation... then of course by all means have at it.

Im gonna get a CQC-11 Blackhawk with the Plain edge satin finish so thats what ill say for your commander. I too agree with Esav, the black blades will get scratched and mared easily and look rough, for a pocket knife i like it to look clean.

I voted Black with a PE. I had a 98 Commander that was black & PE, I liked the look, at least on THAT knife.

My preferences changed too, I would buy mostly serrated and coated blades but now most are uncoated and non-serrated.

I will add one thing the satin finish on my only uncoated Emerson, a Mini Commander, is very nice. My next Emerson will be uncoated too....

I prefer plain edges and uncoated blades. This works out well, because PE's and uncoated blades are usually less startling to sheeple.

Plain edges are easier to sharpen. One opinon I read was that serrations are bad for a self-defence blade because they tend to hang-up in clothing.

One day, tho, I'm going to have to buy at least one scary-looking knife with a black or OD green blade, with serrations, just to have one. I mean: How can you possibly call a knife collection "compete" w/o at least one scary-looking "commando" knife? ;)

You mean that you can De-Animate without a Dork-Ops?!?! I thought that they were the ONLY real de-animation knife.

I personally prefer a satin finish and plain edge. I do like the serrations or combo-edges for work (plastic banding and such), but that's about it.

oh, i also very much prefer non coated blades, the coating looks fine when new, but will scuff and mar up way to easy for me, the one exception would be a green G10 EKI SOCFK with the tanto blade, the black blade just looks right to me on that one, of course green G10 EKIs are pretty hard to come by these days lol, so for most everything i prefer the satin finish myself.

PE for me, but even their PE bead blasted blades have issues with showing scuffs. I know that you can call them love bites or whatever, but I don't think that blades should be getting scuffed so easily like coated or bead blasted blades.

Without Dork Ops trademarked splatter control, de-animation with serrated blades can get pretty messy. I'd go black with the PE for that reason alone.
