Hi pals,

Been a LOOOONG time since I was last on this board (2010, I think?!). If this thread is no longer appropriate, chastise and burn it to the ground. Apologies in advance in that situation!

SO here's my situation: I bought a Kershaw Blackout (w/ serrations) and carried it for years. In fact, I carried several of them. I have a habit of losing small things, especially knives. After my third Blackout I decided that my second Gerber Suspension (GREAT multitool!) is enough for EDC for a while. Fast forward two years to now, and I miss having a knife on me. I've taken to using my keys to open anything that isn't a block of wood/blister pack/index finger. After asking some friends for recommendations I received too many suggestions to really be able to narrow it down, so I come to yall now asking for help.

This is what I liked about my Kershaw Blackout:
1) Plastic handle (winters in NY = no cold metal to hold onto. I like in AR now, so not an issue)
2) Great blade length (3.25ish with 1.25 serration - LOVED it)
3) Spring assisted opening/closing was heaven for one handed operations. I found this so useful I bought a multitool to match.
4) Neat aesthetics

Things I didn't like:
1) If I dropped the knife, it would spring open and bounce about a foot in any random direction due to lack of lock - definitely need one.
2) Price - was $65 when I got it as a poor starving college student. I am a happily employed engineer now, so price shouldn't be an issue.
3) Did I mention the knife flipping open at the slightest jostle? Very annoying.

I'd like to spend 50-100 range. Anything over that and it'll get pre-lost in the mail before it even arrives. I know there are lots and lots of cool Benchmade knives out there, but I'm open to any suggestion, really. I haven't spent a ton of time looking around (just decided a couple days ago I wanted to start carrying again), so forgive the modern ignorance. I will be using this for nearly everything under the sun.

Thanks in advance and sorry if this type of thread gets posted 8 days a week.

Well in that price range a boker kwaiken, spyderco manix, spyderco delica, benchmade Gripptilian/mini griptillian or a spyderco endura would work great. However if you go up $40 more, you will be able to get, IMHO, the best EDC knife ever, a spyderco paramilitary2. It will easily complete any EDC task, require little maintenance/sharpening and be the only knife you will need for years to come. I know it's more then you are looking to spend but it's more than worth it for the product you are reviving.

like John said, almost all those Spydercos are great EDC choices. the only other EDC i have that would fit the bill, minus spring assist, would be the Ontario Rat 1. a very tad heftier than the blackout in had. the opening is very smooth and honestly doesn't need a spring action. if you are dead set on the spring assist, i believe there is an assisted rat 2 or the equivalent esee zancudo coming out soon that has the assisted opening. overheard some guy at shot show chatting about it

I saw some reviews on the Grip around here earlier, so I'll definitely check that out. I'll add the Spydercos and Rat 2 to the list.

Any others?

A Benchmade Volli can be had at your price. It's assisted but has a lock to keep it closed. And it comes with the combo blade you liked. I love combo blades but 95% of everyone else here doesn't.

I carry a Benchmade Barrage and never used the lock. I have dropped it and it never opened on it's own. You can also easily remove the assist spring if it still bothers you.

That BM Barrage looks like a sure winner. I'll shop around and see if I can find one for a bit cheaper.

This thread has been absolutely great and I appreciate everyone's contributions!

Just a little update... picked up a Barrage for 140ish and absolutely love it. I dunno if I'd consider it a complete one handed operation because I need two to hold the sliding pin open to close it, but its damn close and I LOVE it.

Thanks guys :)

You can flick your wrist to close it for now, and in time they loosen up as well.

I have the mini-barrage, freaking love the thing.. and you can close it with one hand no problem, also have the paramilitary 2 so now they battle for pocket time ;D
