OK, I am looking to make a new strop for the house. I am a wood turner on the side so I was planning on starting with a 1 1/2 inch square, or 2X2 piece of black walnut about 18" long. My plan is to turn a handle on it and put one piece of leather on each of the 4 sides. Loading 3 of the 4 with different stropping compound and leaving the 4th plain.

So, the question I have is what size would be optimum for the leather sections? I am thinking 1 1/2 inch wide by 12 long, but what say you? Also, for a progression of 3 compounds, what would they be? I was thinking of ordering diamond grit, but have never used any.

Thanks for any input

What stone do you finish with before stropping?

Its been many years sence I've worked with those stones, what is the scratch pattern like after the black stone? Are the scratches small enough where their hard too see? near mirror polish?

If so I would finish with the stone, skip the rods and move straight to the strop. DMT diamond compound would be a good start, it gives you 6, 3, and 1 micron grit levels to work with. If your finish from the stone is anything like what 2k sandpaper can do then following with those compounds will give you hair splitting mirror edges.

Almost forgot, 1.5-2in wide by 12-15+ long makes for a good size strop.
