I carry a black coated MOD CQD at work in a nylon sheath. I was working in the rain and the knife and sheat got soaked. I dried the knife but like a dummy stuck it back in the wet sheath  I now have rust on the thumb stud, firing button and screws in the handle. What is the best way to remove the rust

get a bottle of mineral spirits, and put some on a qtip and see if that does the trick, if not try a product called naval jelly. Hope it works for you.

If it's surface rust, you can remove it with the so called "miracle cloth". I did on a Cold Steel PeaceKeeper Carbon V.

If that "miracle cloth" is the lemon scented type for general polishing purposes, be very careful when using on your black finished blades. These cloths are recommended on stainless materials such as those in the firearms industry. But they have warned that it can remove bluing from the surface. Try some good old Flitz metal polish. It is a non abrasive type that does indeed remove surface rust but will NOT harm the blued finishes of firearms.

Be careful with Naval Jelly, it contains phosphoric acid if I'm not mistaken and will easily etch your blade. I still think it's okay for screws and buttons though.
