what is the trick to getting a good scan of
of one of my balis!!! i must be missing something because i've got a good scanner???

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by 'good scan,' but I do have a tip. I always put two sheets of white paper over the knife I'm about to scan, so the background is white, not black. In my opinion, this makes the scan more clear, but your scanner can't be a POS.

Mine seem to come out decent, and my background of the lid to my scanner is white. I just put the knife in, drop the lid, and hit the button.

The question is: do you have a new scanner?

A couple of years ago, the technology used in flat-bed scanners changed. The new technology is cheaper to manufacture (which is why the cost of scanners has gone way down in recent years) and it also makes the scanner less thick so it's not as bulky. But, the new technolgy has a very short focal length. It can't focus on anything more than maybe a tenth of an inch above the glass. For scanning documents, which is what these scanners are intended for, this is fine. But, for scanning objects (which flat-bed scanners were never intended for in the first place) it doesn't work.

My scanner is like that. does flat stuff fine but not good for 3d. buy a digital camera, you can get decent ones for around 100 bucks.
