Help with Schrade 293Y Repair

I have been asked to create replacement scales for a Schrade 293Y Trapper. I have purchased jigged bone scales material and wish to begin the process, but I have never assembled or disassembled a folder.

I bought a trapper folder kit to get an idea of how it all works, and I can see how the basic parts fit together and function.

This knife, however is pretty rusty. The brass on the liners is oxidized too. I have cleaned the brass some with some WD-40 and emery cloth. I have also done some light cleaning on the blades the same way.

The old rivets that held on the scales have been removed, but the center pin that holds the spacer/spring pieces is still intact, as are the nicke silver pins that go throught the bolsters.

Is it necessary to remove the three pins and completely disassemble the knife in order to properly re-rivet the scales to the liners? If not necessary, is it advisable?

While the rust on the knife is so deep in some places it cannot all be removed, I am doing this for the father of my closest friend aside from my wife. I really want to do this right.

Any advise I can get would be appreciated.

Yes, to properly rivet the scales you will have to remove the center rivet, and at least one of the blade rivets. You could glue the scales on and use fake rivets, but to do it right the knife must be disassembled.

Thanks. I was really wondering how to make the rivets for the scales work without taking the knife apart. Thought I might be missing some trick that I wasn't getting.

Well, I set out tonight to try to drift those pins out. Nothin' doin'! I was finally able to get out the center pin by using a very small burr on a Dremel Roto Tool to drill out enough of the pin to push it out the other side with a small finishing nail used as a drift. That worked OK on the brass pin, but the nickel silver pins on the bolsters won't budge. Don't really want to drill them out, buy I may have to. I'll use the drill press for that, though.

Don't drill them! Use a pin punch on one side. This will raise the other side slightly. File the raised side flush. Then use the punch on the filed side to raise the head on the other side. File it. Alternate until the flaring of the rivets is gone. Punch the pin out..

I tried to follow your link, but for some reason that page will not load for me. Thanks for the help. I will try another browser to open that link.

OK, I can't link directly, but I figured out I can just type in the url and get there. Any particular thread, or just the site generally?

I have tried to drift pin/rivet holding the blades, but am getting no more that a mm or so. Too little to file down without destroying the bolster.

Thanks for your patience and help.

You might wish to pose this question in the Schrade Collectors section under the 'Manufacturers' heading.
There's a couple over there who have done the same sort of thing, and, they're a really friendly, helpful bunch.
