I am looking for someone to mill out an aluminum plate/bar for my Surface Grinder Attachment build. I live in Yucatan, and it's difficult finding the materials and anyone to do this sort of work. I'd purchase the aluminum in the US, have it shipped directly to whoever is doing the work, then have the milled chuck shipped to my son in the US, who will bring it when he visits.

If I had to make a chuck with round magnets and nothing but a drill press (or a hand held drill), I would use a Forstner bit. They work well in aluminum and make flat bottomed holes aside from the divot in the center. And they are cheap and readily available at big box stores, at least over here in the US. Maybe your son could bring a kit with the aluminum, magnets and a Forstner bits next time he visits.

why not just buy a "Magnetic Chuck" it is a ready made thing.. by the time you buy the parts/pay someone to build you one .. you could most likely find one for $200-$300 online
have it shipped to your son .. he could likely ship it to there..

Thank you for the suggestions,

Yes, I may consider the round magnet solution.

My thought has always been to buy a ready made, fine pole, permanent magnetic chuck. The only narrow one I have found is on aliexpress...... 70mm x 150mm. I have been advised by someone who bought one that it is not very strong, and in use, the parts being ground moved around. I'm concerned that with a chuck any wider than this, I will not be able to surface grind the chuck before using it.

I would contact Greg at Reeder. I know he sells the magnet sets for $25. IIRC, he sells the aluminum magnet holder block, too.

id try one of any of these.. don't forget the Demagnetizer!!! Saludos a te ..

I will contact Reeder (their current SGA uses a steel block)

Re. the Ebay magnetic chucks..... they appear to be the same Chinese made chucks available on Aliexpress. Has anyone used one of these for an SGA and found that it functions well?

Re. Greg at Reeder..... Greg stated that Reeder does not sell the "magnet holder block" by itself, only as part of a complete SGA assembly.

Re. purchasing a Magnetic Chuck in the US.......... I believe that my son might not be allowed to bring one on a commercial passenger plane (carry-on or checked). I was advised by Suburban Tool (a US manufacturer of magnetic chucks) that they would only ship their chucks by ground, not by air.
