Help with sharpmaker

I recently got a sharpmaker and I have been having a little difficulty with it. I can create a bur along the entire edge but I can't seem to remove it from the entire edge. I've been trying to keep the angle as consistent as possible but I just can't seem to get it. If anyone can offer advice on what I'm doing wrong or what I should try it would be much appreciated.

Light passes, keep the angle constant.

Run the edge through some wood.

More light passes on the UF.

Strop, sure, belt, pants, paper, cardboard.

Green polishing compound does well, if you use it on your pants, make sure you have a good washer or that they're beater work pants, sometimes the compound doesn't want to let go.

+1 for skimo. If you are having issues removing the bur from the opposite side then you are either pressing too hard, or not hard enough...try and keep it consistent and take your time.

I use a marker on the blade to make sure I'm making contact on the whole blade consistently. There is a learning curve, just keep trying you'll get it.

Krav got in first with this trick but I'll second it. Make sure that the off-side (not the side where you created the burr) is at the right angle for the Sharpmaker to hit the entire bevel. For instance, if you sharpen one side until you create a burr all along the edge, then you sharpen the other side, make sure that this second side is at an angle that works for the Sharpmaker (15 or 20 degrees). A lot of times one side of a blade will sharpen up with a Sharpmaker but the other side is not the right angle. If you aren't hitting the bevel or the edge on the second side you won't have any effect on the burr.

You can use a black Sharpie to mark the bevel and see if you're hitting it. If you are, the Sharpmaker rod will take the Sharpie off of your bevel. You'll see it on the rod and you'll see a clean bevel. If you're not removing the marker from the blade, you're not getting at the burr.

You could have an edge bevel with an unequal angles. You can raise a burr on one side, but switching to the other side does not remove it. Are you raising a burr along the entire edge on both sides? If so, greatly reduce the pressure on the stones. If not, try the Sharpie trick as Krav said.

Edit: Sorry I missed Dale's post. He's got it.

Well, I finally got a decent edge on my rat 1! And I only took 4 hours:eek: the sharpie tip helped a lot thanks everybody

Not gonna lie, a nice medium whet or water stone will do wonders prepping your edge angle for the Sharpmaker if the angles came to you bad.
