Help with Shrade Walden 165 UH?

A nice early 165UH from the first production run, Sean! The markings and details are standard for that production from what I can tell, albeit a very early serial number, #00315, making it from the first year of production.

According to Clemente's listing, the 165UH was only made 1969/70 (yours) and then 1994-97 and only the first run (Schrade-Walden) has notches on the spine near the guard. 'Tis a rare knife ! Excellent find indeed.

wow, I'm blown away. I knew it was a good knife, I'm not a collector or anything but I do appreciate a nice blade. I picked it up and thought, "I could probably skin a deer with this thing... paid 2.50 for it. I'm going to more estate sales!

There were two main productions of the 165UH pattern knives. The first began in 1969 with 2,864 pieces shipped, and ended in 1970 with 941 pieces shipped. While dropped from the catalogs and advertising, remnants of the two year production continued to be shipped for several years, 466 in 1971, 310 in 1972 and finally the remaining 289 pieces in 1973. All of this first production had the distinctive thumb grooves above the tang in front of the guard. Predecessor Old Timer 165OT and successive productions of both 165OT and 165UH did not. It also used the "lozenge" shaped shield as used on the Old Timer series, albeit with the UH signature stamped.

A second production was made in 1994 without the thumb grooves, and with the more familiar UH signature "bomb" shield. This production run essentially ended in 1996 and, as before, remnants were shipped for a few years afterward.

Yet a third production was made some time later before the closing. An unknown quantity were produced without shielding, possibly for some SFO customer.

Over the years, I have used the pattern (the 165OT) to dress, skin and butcher more deer than you could haul in a dump truck. Literally hundreds. Carry the knife around for a while, use it for camp chores and you will see how user friendly the handle shape is (ergonomic). I have several dozen of the pattern, several of which are the Uncle Henry variant. The overall length only gets in my way when I am seated in a truck or Jeep. Otherwise, I tend to forget it is on my belt.

I need another one!

Michael, you have offered me invaluable information and I thank you. The blade Gods have been kind to me. That's a helluva collection by the way! Even though my knife is perfectly fine, I still suffer from "knife-envy"

Oh, and word to the wise: do NOT set the knife on your table at Starbucks while having an argument on the phone with your girlfriend... the police apparently from upon that... true story

There could be a rather lengthy list of "don'ts" depending upon where you live. My biggest "don't" is don't lend your knife to a friend or relative. Not if you value the knife or the relationship.

I haven't bought a new knife in quite some time. Too many non-knife distractions lately. But I did pick up another lightly used (but dirty) 165OT recently. It is a #21121 Schrade Walden with the second type sheath (they used different sheaths than the 165UH stone pocket) and markings on blade left.

Hey Cal - Love that linked thread!! 165UH is my favorite!!
And the Multi colored 165OT's and the Shakari's are also very handsome.

This knife #17031 from Michael's post now lives at my house

Won a couple others with all the bling #908 & #2732 last year. Haven't picked up a good 165OT yet.
Going to need one later in the year to fill a SW display frame I won in May.
