Help with "soccer-mom friendly" tactical folders

I hate to admit this, but I am looking for a few more "soccer-mom friendly" tactical folders to carry. It's for those occasions when I am in the midst of mommy-sheeple; opening birthday presents, cutting oranges at soccer games, etc. You get the idea.

However, I still want the features of today's modern tactical knife: i.e. liner/axis/whatever lock, titanium liners, thumb stud/hole, ATS-34/440V/154CM metal etc.

Now, I'm looking for another folder or two to add to the "AYSO-games carry weekends" (those of you with kids will understand maybe better than the single knife knuts).

For those still a bit unclear on the concept; well, let's just say the REKAT Hobbit (serrations too scary) amd Spyderco Chinook (bowie profile too spooky) is a no-no--almost 98% guaranteed to produce whispers of "oh my god" under the mommies-collective's breath. I personally don't care, its just I don't need that stigma attached to my daughter, okay?

I'm figuring the CRK Sebenza "looks" rather benign and am procuring one. Anyway, I'm also looking at the Spyderco Wegner. Any other models out there I'm missing that might fit the bill. Any/all help appreciated.

Benchmade 705 or small Sebenza. I think that you would be surprised that such knives would raise few eyebrows. I work in the emergency room of a large hospital in Los Angeles. Sometimes in an emergency when I need to cut something right now, I'll whip out my small sebenza or small Apogee. No one has ever said anything bad about it. I even had a nurse tell me that she was impressed that I was a "real man" and had a knife. The BM 705 is a beauty for around $100 and the sebenza is the rolls royce of knives with a relative price to match.

All knives are bad. Use a plastic spreader or a spork instead. A Benchmade 940, plain edge (to avoid the scary serrations) might be acceptable as well. Good luck with your quest.

Look at:
BM 690, 770, 705, 450, 735, & 940.
Spyderco blue inlay Native, inlay Vesuvius, pink or blue Delica, colored Dyad Jr's, Mouse.
MT colored mini-Socoms.
Anything from William Henry.
Wood inlay Sebenzas
CRKT Wasp.
Camillus EDC (esp the anniversary edition)
Look at knives with colored handles (more friendly looking than black) and blades under 3.5"
There's a lot more out there.

My suggestion:

Gerber SL Series

SL1.jpg

  • Blade Steel: ATS 34
  • Handle Material: G 10 or carbon fiber
  • Lock Type: Liner
  • Blade Length: 4.50”
  • Overall: 7 3/8”
  • Weight: 1.9 oz.

Give 'em something to talk about...get a Sifu.:) Seriously, Spyderco has lots to offer and you can't go wrong with the Sebenza.

What about a Chris Reeve Mnandi?

Nice, small, not too tactical. I understand 1SKS may have some on hand...

It's next on my list.

I don't own any but the William Henry's get a lot of support as well, most of their models are fairly small as well.

Of course you can't go wrong with a small Sebenza either ;)

If you are dealing with the soccer mom community a Tim Herman Wall Street Tactical should be about right. I am sure if you ask him Tim will finish it with a nice bit of G10.

Regards,

Ed

The blade isn't up there in the length of most that have been talked about, but I'm really turned on by the new SOG Sculptura. Translucent Zytel handle, arc loc, small, different from anything else out there, and "cute." Wouldn't want to tackle those oranges that are as big as grapefruit wiht it tho. Who knows tho? You might convert some of the Mommies to being knife carriers also.

I do wonder at the size of the knives you're talking about, if it includes the large Sebenza.IMO, size of the blade is a large component of many sheeple problems. Plus, I think the average sheeple may be familiar with the appearance of traditional patterns, but most haven't seen most of the tactical stuff we see so much here.

Recent review in TK has convinced me that the Camillus Carbon Series Trapper -- $20 at SMKW -- is gonna be one of my next purchases. You can always have a tactical in another pocket. I tend to think that most sheeple aren't so likely to panic at sight of what their Dad's may have carried all thru their childhood.

The Spyderco Civilian will slice through those oranges like butter.

However, it might be a little bit on the large side. And when the Mom's say "Oh my god" it probably won't be a whisper.

I'd probably stay away from the large Wegner. Not that I don't like the knife - just that it's a big knife. The Wegner Jr. might be more on the ideal side (if you can find one). The mouse is similar, only tiny.

Other Spyderco's to look at: Delica, Calypso jr., Navigator (now with VG-10, apparently), Lum Chinese. The Vesuvius is really nice as well.

A few Benchmades: The 705 - very nice knife. I just recently got one, and am very impressed. I actually like it as much as the 710.

The 940 is also a great knife. I've wanted one for a while. Blade length is a bit larger than the 705.

I handled a 770 a few days ago. I dont like it as much as I thought I would. Smaller than my 705, almost too small for my hands. It is carbon fiber, though... carbon fiber... drool...

William Henry makes a variety of very nice gentlemens' knives. Take a look at those too.

My top three of the above would be:
1. Spyderco Lum Chinese - super nice
2. BM 705 - Small, very useful
3. BM 940 - Very nice, not too small, not too big

Do you know if Gerber sells that knife in the US? All of the SL series knives I've been able to find have 3.25" blades. I'd be interested in one of the longer ones if I could only find it!

The last time I knew I was going to be in a comparable situation, I carried my Spyderco Pegasus. Small, friendly, "cute". It caused no trouble or consternation among the women, though half the men present wanted to take a closer look.:)

The Spyderco CF Dragonfly is another excellent choice for that sort of use. I keep mentioning on the Spyderco forum that I'd like to see some more handle choices available for the Dragonfly. Sal once started a thread asking women (specifically) what they'd like to see in a knife and got lots of answers that could be summarized as "small, not serrated, good looking." Something like a Dragonfly with a nice handle (i.e., not black FRN) seems to fit that description very well.

BM 350
Kershaw Chive
Kershaw Boa in colored grip
One of those cute colored UDT's

Small Sebenza, blue BM940, medium Mayo TnT, mouse. All good.

I would avoid the Boa. It's pretty, but probably too big and scary.

Same with my new Boguszewski Cobra. Cool knife, I'm going to try it as an EDC for a while, but I don't think I'll open it in the office.

Hmmmm. Let's see. We have the large KFF, the Civilian, the Matriarch, the Strider folders (very sheeple friendly), and the Buck Strider. But let's not forget the MT LCC and the Socom Elite, the Worden tactical, the CUDA, and the Harpy for good measure.
Should have no problem with any of these guys,
Matt

I think those are great suggestions. The small Sebenza is non-threatening, the blue 940 that I used to carry got alot of ooohs and aaahs, because of its looks. The stainless Dragonfly is another one that comes to mind.
Not sure how "tactical" any of these knives are, though.

What has surprised me is the positive reaction that women have had to my Apogee (the same size as a BM 710, and it's lighter coloring actually make it look bigger)-they love it. They all say pretty much the same thing...."it's so pretty", "it's so light". Not one has mentioned the size, or seemed threatened by it. I guess color is everything for PC??

hehe, Jazzman, you left out the AFCK, Military, Commander, Sifu-knives for hanging out with the soccer moms, indeed:p

I really like my William Henry in black palm. Very nice and super thin with an excellent carry system. Also the sog looks good. A case mini copperlock in a nice jigged bone should also be very acceptable. Just keep the OTF in your bag.:D

Bob,

I can not answer your question because I’ve only handled a model of the Gerber SL series at a local knife shop. I was taken with this folder (therefore my suggestion) but at that time I bought a Spyderco Military. I took the specs from their Web site.
