Help with SOG Magnadot

Hey everyone,

I'm knew here. So hi. Anyways, I am also a noob when it comes to knives, so it could be a really obvious question, but bear with me. So I've had my Magnadot for a while, got it for Christmas like two years ago or something. I've always liked knives, but never really payed attention to EDC'ing them and whatnot until now. I've started looking around for a new knife to pick up, and am thinking the Kershaw Cryo. Anyways back to the point. So my Magnadot is having a bit of trouble opening quickly and easily; it's rather tough to open. It could be due to my Youtube browsing and the fact it isn't assisted opening that built my expectations that all knives open with a little flick of the thumb, but I'd like to it to open faster as expected. I put a bit of oil down by the pivot and I think it helped a little, and I found a couple hex drivers to loosen the pivot, but the pivot is actually like a two-sided hex screw, and I can't unscrew them at all, I can only twist whichever side I choose in the socket, without actually loosening or tightening it. Is it not supposed to be adjusted and flip out as quickly as I expect? Or am I just trying to loosen it wrong? All help is appreciated!

It's a lockback, right? If I recall my SOG's anyway. It would have been old and out of production two years ago.

Lockbacks are designed with a bias towards closing. If you open it an eighth of an inch and let it go it snaps shut, right?

If you want something that springs open, or falls open get a different type of knife. It's a good, sturdy knife as it is and messing with it won't improve it, only mess it up.

Most if not all lockback knives don't make for good "flick" knives. Joe covered the why in this case. If you want something that "flicks" open, you might have better luck with a different type of lock. I would also agree that tinkering with the knife will only mess things up that work now. Especially if you are a self proclaimed newb.
 
Cool thanks for the help, guys! Yeah, I'm hoping to get the Cryo soon, but I'm both broke (I'm 15, no job, so), and I still haven't decided on it. There are too many good cheap(er) knives to choose from. So far I do like what Kershaw offers, I just can't pick which one.
 
Call sog they have a pretty responsive customer service guy.

You may want to clean it with hot water, mild dish soap and a toothbrush. Dry it with paper towels, blow out water with air, oil.
 
The Pivot screws may be loctited or something to keep them in place so you may be able to take it apart with a little effort. That being said, be careful since you don't want to strip the screws or break anything. See if your dad or someone has another hex or torx bit you can use since you might need to hold one screw in place to unscrew the other. If you don't want to take it apart, orange oil can sometimes help clean out gunk. I remember just using a Swiss army knife to eat an orange and I left it in the bowl with the scraps overnight. I was amazed how much easier the knife opened the next day!
 
I'm not going to repeat what others have said, but they're right about washing it in a grease cutting soap and also about lock backs generally being harder to open. As to the Cryo, it's a fine knife, but HEAVY for the size. The Swerve is another good option at a little less money ($25 delivered).
 
I do like the swerve. I have the cheaper version that came out in the Walmart value pack and its pretty nice. When I first got it I thought it reminded me of a fat cryo. The Thermite can be had nowadays for about the same price as the Cryo and I think you get a little bit more knife for your money, and its only .1 ounces heavier.
