So ive owned knives for quite awhile now but am just recently getting back into it and know next to nothing about the various steels. Is there a website or something where i could learn more about the steels best used for knives and more specifically ones for heavier choppers?

what would you like to know about steels best suited for choppers?
are you planning on getting a chopper?

Basically what would be best for a heavy duty chopper. I want something that holds an edge fairly well and is durable.

Im thinking of getting a custom chopper made, or even possibly trying to build one myself. I couldnt temper it myself but apparently there are companies that will do that for me.

After doing some reading im thinking about O1 tool steel, anyone have any opinions on using it for a chopper?

From the research I've done, your two best choppers are going to be either Fehrman Extreme or Final Judgement, and Busse's Battle Mistress models. These have a price tag to go with the excellence. But the Fehrman uses 3V which is raved about for it's toughness and of course Busse uses INFI. The interesting thing is, whenever you mention these two manufacturers, fights start breaking out. Their followers are competitive. Busse, however will do custom work to order.
I've got a Fehrman Final Judgement on the way, and I'm starting an order on a Busse Custom Battle Mistress in the very near future.

if i were to have a custom chopper made, i'd probably choose CPM-3V. CPM-3V is extremely tough and has very good wear resistance.

remember, steel is only part of the equation. proper design and heat treat is just as important.

I've found that S7 & CPM-M4 are often used in some good choppers.
