I just picket up a used Stider HT (drop point) and it was in need of a good sharpening. No dings just dull. After countless strokes on my Sharpmaker, 40 degree, the edge has become marginally better. The secondary edge has become nice and shiny doing this so I believe I'm making good contact using the 40 degree position of the rods. I have not use the Sharpy method as of yet, thought about trying that today.
Any ideas???

Thanks in advance

Sounds like work fit for either a DMT benchstone or a good natural stone. The sharpmaker was never designed to fix a damaged over dulled edge it's for putting a final edge or pre-strop edge on a sharp knife. (sharp being duller than after sharpening but still cuts, just not as well)

if its at the right angle it will work although it might not work fast without diamond rods or wrapping the rod with coarse paper or cloth.

try the sharpy and see if its hitting it right, if it is just keep working on it, if not get the angle right, or try it freehand with a DMT.

i would have to disagree with the statement that the SM isnt made for dull knives, i have reprofiled knives with one with the diamond rods, or before that after wrapping the stone with coarse emory cloth with a rubber band, it is designed for that and will work fine at it, it just isnt gonna do it very fast because the stones they come with are too fine for that, the diamod rods/emory cloth are a different story though and remove metal fairly quickly.

Well other than the insane cost of diamond rods which double the overall cost of the sharpmaker I agree.

try wrapping some emory cloth around the std rods, fairly coarse emory cloth, it works pretty good, really about as well as the diamond rods, and costs less than a dollar.

use rubber bands or tape to secure it, sandpaper will work too but it doesnt last as long and the sand rubbing off the paper makes a mess lol.

Thanks guys, I'll try this and let you know how i did. I do have a cheap that is also in need of some work, so I'm going to start with that one and then move up the Strider

OK, I gave the Emery cloth a try tonight. This is what I did.
I ripped some 1/4" plywood to 3/4" wide and cut the course emery cloth to the same width and glued the cloth to the plywood strips with some spry adhesive. Then I taped the strips to the Sharpmaker rods. After around 25 swipes of the blade on the emery paper the bevel was perfect and sharp. going from the cloth to the dark rods and used the sharpmaker as normal. The end result is a hair shaving edge.

Thanks all for the help.
