My friends have an old sump pump in their basement. It runs but it does not pump. I have not found anything on the net about it. If someone has any info it will be greatly appreciated.

Here is the info is on the pump.
Galaxie
Code No.: S23
Serial No.: 30338-117
Johnson Water System Co.
Mansfield Ohio USA

Thanks.

The impeller may be broken-free from the shaft. Is it a pedestal or a submersible? You may simply consider replacing it...

The impeller may be broken
Or it might be so clogged up nothing is getting through. You can probably take it apart pretty easily and see what the situation is.

It plugged in? :p

Check the filter, see if it's all crudded up. The motor might have a screw loose somewhere. The motor might be burned up, it happens when you dry run them too much or put too much stress on them. Try hitting it with a wrench.

A new one would only cost about $30 so they're not that big a deal to replace.

Everything mentioned above ^

If it runs often, its a good idea to have a spare set aside. Pre-rig the spare for quick change should one fail. Use a rubber boot on the pipe to make the switch quick. A one-way inline valve is a good idea also.

Unplug it and let it cool down, checking all the above. Then give it a try. If that does not work, a replacement might be a good idea.

Get a new one first chance you get, an old sump pump can never be fully relied upon when needed. Fix it and use it as a backup, but a new pump should be the primary in the hole. Don't ask me how I know all this:D

Thanks all.
I will tell my neighbor all your suggestions. The pump, judging by the fount on the pump, is from the 60's and he has never used it in the 10 years he has owned the house. Also he has never seen his basement flood before. There has been a bit of rain here in RI. In fact the water coming in his basement is ground water coming in between the town water pipe and the sleeve around it. I got the water to stop coming in by warping rubber roofing around both pipes and securing it with hose clamps.

the seals around the shaft driving the impeller are probably leaking air causing poor priming.

Yup! One of these around the shaft would be a problem!

Best of luck, I know what it's like in RI since my brother lives in Warwick and water was running in from the basement windows as of yesterday. Not a pretty scene.

Sorry to hear that your brother is not high and dry. I am fortunate (knock on wood) that my place is dry, although there is standing water in my yard.

Water has stopped coming into my friends basement.

My son is going to school in Warwick. He sent me a picture of a mall near his house and this huge parking lot was covered in water. His school was closed for a while (NEIT) because the parking lots had knee high water in them. Luckily his apartment stayed dry and his car didn't get flooded.

That mall is 20min north of my place. I live on the water but it is tidal so although the river was high, it just overflowed into the bay. I am fortunate that I can work from home and the road to the packy store was not flooded.:)

Also my friend/neighbor and I took apart his pump last night after a few beers. The seals are all shot. He will be buying a new one. Although he liked the suggestion of fixing this one for a back up.
