a while ago i received my new in box red swisschamp marked "vintage store display" on that online auction site for $70 buy it now. i thought maybe some of you guys could help me figure out what year this knife is. i don't have a camera so all i can do is describe the following features that may help with the year. no crimper in pliers, screw in scissors, no groove in corkscrew, grey rim around magnifying glass, differently shaped phillips inline screwdriver, and, the keyring is on the awl side. that's all the information that i can gather from comparing with my new swisschamp. i hope i came to the right place to get the info on this victorinox.

I can't give you any info but I do have a question. Is the gray rim plastic or metal around magnifying glass?

Well the plastic is on the newer models as the older had metal I believe.

The older magnifying glass was made of glass and has a gray rim. The newer ones are all plastic with no rim. However, there may be an even older version that had a metal rim.

Well the smooth corkscrew and screw in the scissors are two features you wouldn't normally find together, the smooth corkscrew would normally suggest a post-1991 date, the screw in the scissors normally suggests a pre-1991 date. With that in mind I'd suggest that strongly points at a date sometime in the early 1990's, as not not everything changes at exactly the same time, simply a case of using up old stock or whatever. Here's a page that gives a very clear breakdown of the development of the SwissChamp: http://www.e-webtechnologies.com/sak/Victorinox_Evolution_of_the_Swiss_Champ.pdf

If that page strongly contracts anything I've just said, strong odds on that the author is right and I'm wrong. :D

thanks gareth that is an informative link about the swisschamp. i still can't nail down the exact year though.

What does the stamping on the base of the main blade say? Does it have the crossbow engraving?

A quick question; does it have the multi-purpose hook on the back? If it does then that is definitely a 1991 indicator. Combine that with the old screw in the scissors and I think it has to have been made in 1991 or 92 at the latest. You really don't get much more accurate than that I'm sorry to say.

the swisschamp has the crossbow stamp along with the rostfrei mark. yes gareth, it has the multi-purpose hook. so it's either a 1991 or a 1992? thanks, jeff
