Hi everyone,

I have a CRKT Batum Compact. I really enjoy using the knife but I have one issue with it. The choil closest to the blade edge is rather small and creates a rather sharp point. Is there a way you'd recommend to make the choil bigger and less sharp? I have a Dremel and could sand it bigger. But what i'm worried about is that this method would create too much heat and compromise the heat-treating on the blade. If you have a recommendation on what to do, please share.

Thank you,
Thomas.

You can protect the heat treat by dipping the blade in water between each quick and light pass with the dremel. Gotta be careful and over cautious about not overheating because you are grinding right at the edge. Then do the fine finish manually with files/sandpaper. I have made many a choil this way just take your time.
Also on the Batum you may be able to widen the choil on the flipper end as well as towards the edge. I would start on that end and go as far as you feel comfortable with there before cutting into the edge.
Final note is when using a Drexel you have to be really careful when moving it perpendicular to the blade so that it doesn't skip and then gouge the flat of the blade or the handle! I've turned a couple pretty knives ugly by being careless about that!
