I refurbished a Japanese knife my friend had as a cheap birthday present, but would like to know if anybody can tell me what it says.

Here are some pictures I took:

I assume that it will just be the makers name but my friend would like to know as well.

Thank you
Kris

The first character looks like the one in Shogi for the king/general. Annnnnd, that's about the extent of my Japanese, sorry! :D

Nice knife though... is it a deba bocho?

It says:

King's Crown (2 words)
White
Ibis <--- I'm not 100% sure this is the correct translation. I know it's some kind of crane-like wading bird like this...

Hello, I am from China. In Chinese,
"王冠” could be "皇冠“，means http://pic.nipic.com/2007-12-03/2007123213616235_2.jpg
"白鹭“ means http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&newwindow=1&q=%E7%99%BD%E9%B9%AD&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wi

But I don't know what they mean in Japanese.:D

I don't know Japanese either, just like their stuff! It looks very much like one I have which is a Japanese carpenter's knife. Mine is used to mark wood for cut off, shaving joints, and general carpenter type duties. Mine is white steel forged, treated to Rc67, full tang, and wrapped. Tradition has it that the maker's name or family name is put on the blade....at least on sword tangs I've seen. Not much help, but looks like a great tool!

Aren't the top two characters an indication of trademark.

The you would have the maker.

And possible the material.

Since it's not a Wilderness & Survival Skills question, he should not post it in W&SS.
You could send Fujita Yuji a visitor message with a link to this thread, asking him to look in.

Thanks, Esav. I've just found this thread.

As stated in previous posts,
the crown of the King for 王冠
and
white heron for 白鷺

There are several white herons in Japan but
it means no particular heron. it means jut white one.
