As some of you may remember, I had bad lock up issues on my 0560. Zt fixed it in 6 weeks and sent it back. I have had it for roughly a month now. A new problem developed about two days ago. The action is extremely gritty and the blade fails to flip using pressure on the flipper. It gets about halfway out. If I use wrist action it come all the way open. When closing and opening, the blade makes an extremely high pitched, metal on metal sound like breaks with highly worn pads. I have used detergent and hot water which didn't help. I have taken it apart and done a full cleaning and lubing two times and it fixes the problem for about 5 flips then it comes back. If I allow the blade to sit for a few hours, the problem will go away. Upon flipping it a few times the problem returns. The only anomaly I can detect is a small flattening of the detent ball. I don't know if this specifically is enough to cause this problem. I am seeing if anyone has experienced this before and knows of a quick fix that won't void the warranty. ZT had my knife for 6 weeks and I really don't want to have to send it in again and be 0560-less for another month and a half. At that point, they will have had the knife for 2.5 months out of the 3 months I have owned it.

Sounds to me like there's some crap in the bearings...I would take it apart and give the hole knife a thorough cleaning soap water and a tooth brush:thumbup:

I want to say two other things:

1. Taking it apart will not void the warranty.

2. The bearings will not all fall out if you take the knife apart, there held in a (nylon?) housing. (You might have already known that lol)

Good luck!

I am going to try this but I think the problem lies in the detent ball.

Try oiling the detent ball of you suspect it. The oil should help for a few opening of it's the culprit.

Many of them make that sound, does not hurt a thing, opening with a little wrist is OK. Why not just use it and not worry about the little stuff and then if there is ever a bigger issue send it back. If you bought it from me I will look at it , three days here and three days back, and if it needs to be exchanged, I can do that as well.

It isn't a minor scrape that it made previously. It is actually difficult to close and open. The screech is extremely loud. I understand what you're saying. If the scraping sound was minor, I wouldn't stress it but it is very loud and extremely gritty. It feels like there are large grains of sand in the area tjay contacts the detent. I appreciate your response though, Dave.

Call kershaw and see if they can send you a new one and you send yours back when you get it. I seem to remember seeing someone was able to do that.

I am going to clean the bearings and see if that works. If it doesn't I will just call Kershaw tomorrow.

I used a toothbrush, q-tip, and shop towel. I cleaned it head to toe. Right after cleaning it, it was as smooth as glass. About 10-20 flicks later, it, once again, was extremely gritty. The high pitched squeal actually attracted my dog from the next room. I will be calling Kershaw tomorrow. Thank you all for the replies and the ideas.

Well darn...oh and I must say its impressive that you took it apart at 4:00 am and got it back together without screwing it up (I couldn't lol)

Hmm, did you see scratches or any other damage on the blade?

Nope. Other than the trail made on the blade from the detent which happens to every knife, there was nothing significant. There was a surface scratch but it was imperceptible when I ran my nail over it and it would only make contact with the detent for the millisecond it would take to push past it. The oddest thing: I can let the knife sit for an hour or so and it is smooth again. After five or so flicks, the blade is again gritty. It feels as though I am rubbing something on a rocky surface.

Have you ever used loctite on the pivot screw? This sounds like something that happened to me with a different knife and ultimately I think some loctite got into the detente from the pivot screw area and then hardened. I cleaned it a couple of times with some of those alcohol wipes and it went away.

Why don't you just send it to me for an exchange and we can quit messing around with it, just sayin.
