Hello all!
just stumbled onto this forum, thought it was cool and very informative.
Anyways i figured you guys know your stuff bout knives, and thought id ask if you know how to restore blades ( very light rust and stains mild scratches, and a few nicks ).
My other has been asked a million times but,
Could you help me pick out a knife!?
Basic needs
1. Rugged ( dropping, draging, water, general abuse)
2. No lockbacks
3. price range is $130 or below
4. lightweight
5. Quality (like to use it for atleast 2 years)

I was thinking about the Sog JetEdge II
This a good choice?
Thanx every body

Well, let me be the first to welcome you to the forums!

Now, in answer to your questions, sure, there are a number of us who can help you out with fixing up your blade; the question is, however, are you looking for d0-it-yourself instructions or for someone to ship it off to?

In the case of the former, it entails a process of sanding the blade down with progressively finer grits of abrasive, and then re-buffing the blade out. If the rust is exceptionally minor and the scratches VERY light, you might be able to get away with just re-buffing, or even maybe a going-over with of Flitz or similar polish.

If you want to send it off to be refinished, many of the makers in the Shop Talk forum will be glad to help you out, but many times the original company will refinish and sharpen your knife for a small fee. It's something to consider, especially if you have a "Production Custom" like a CRK or the like.

Finally, the biggie...whew! "...Help me pick a knife..."!

I think you'll find that probably no two responses will be alike on this one, especially since (even though it may not seem like it) you've left us all with pretty wide-ranging parameters. Mostly, what you'll find out from this question is, "What is each responder's personal favorite style/maker/finish/etc."

My two bits would be less than helpful here, Es...while almost any of the reputable companies (too many to name) can provide you a wide variety of serviceable options, as a maker, I tend to make whatever I need. Might I suggest that you bop over to 1-Stop Knife Shop , and support your new-found favorite Forum?!? Or, you can browse the Forums and find any number of links to an INCREDIBLE array of Custom Makers' websites...many of their prices may boggle your mind!!

:D

Benchmade 710 with plain edge 154cm is my first choice.I just got one recently and had no idea that benchmades were this good.

I've always been a big fan of Spydie Lockbacks for great performance (especially in an affordable package) but for some odd reason you said no lockbacks so...
Hmmm... you didn't specify size so I must mention the Camillus EDC in 154CM, D2, or Talonite - great knife and in spite of it's somewhat dimunitive size - it is quite strong.
In the world of serious liner-locks consider a Spyderco Military, Outdoor Edge Magna, or CRKT M16 or M18. My experience with these knives leads me to believe them to be the strongest liner-locks money can buy, however i've heard that the Al Mar SERE, MicroTech LCC, MicroTech SOCOM Elite, and Buck Strider are all very durable as well, but I can't vouch for these knives personally.

Lastly, I just have to mention, since i'm such a Spyderco fan - Spyderco Gunting - it's a little bit weird in terms of EDC considerations, but it does have a very strong CPM440V blade and a very strong Spyderco Compression Lock going for it... something to think about.

Welcome to the forums! You didn't state what you wanted to use the knife for. You mentioned a folder, and there are many that may meet your needs. A Spyderco Lightweight Calypso Jr. is a very nice everyday carry knife and can be found for under $50.00

Deciding to go with the benchmade 710, love the looks, fits my needs. and btw i just need it for, well, just about every thing a pocket knife is good for, No special purpose's. Thanx a bunch you guys. 1 stop knife shop! i purchase all my knives from them, ( 23 total knives :P )

The 710 has a rather large following here on the forums. The Camillus EDC is worth a look also.
