You could try replacing the detent spring with one with less tension. No idea where you'd get one of those springs though.

Or you could try cutting your spring. But be careful doing it. If you trim too much the lock will no longer operate.

I just took it apart and the spring was very stiff so I just pressed it together for a little bit and that took care of the problem. Thanks for the tip on the spring!

I would not have done that. The spring is usually going to be set within certain parameters for reliability. Likely all you needed to do was flush out with oil and then compressed air as there was probably some debris or leftover machining. Also, button locks tend to need to get broken in and will be sticky for a little bit in the beginning.
 
I’ve done similar (and much worse lol) stuff before with my button locks and haven’t had reliability issues. I think he’ll be okay if he simply compressed the spring a few times.
