Any help on choosing one appreciated !!!

Do you mean just ONE? That's like asking us to pick a peanut for you. :)

O.K. you gotta start some place.... how about the 18" AK.

Whoops almost forgot to welcome you on board. Can you tell us a little bit about how you want to use the knife?

Thanks for replying, thats what Uncle Bill recommended. What do you have ? why the 18 AK:D

Im thinking about the AK 18, It is basically going to be the start of a collection. I have a little 9inch khuk which my girlfriend bought me but dont know anything about it. It has a brass covering abd is not very well made but It made me fall in love with Khuks as I used to stay in the bush and going out to the toilet at night was much more fun carrying my khuk. I will be using it for a sorts of chores and weight is not really an issue. Im originally from South Africa just in case your wondering why I was in the bush in Ireland:)

Bendan,

The 18" AK is Himilayan Imports most popular model. It is a large heavy knife by anyone's standards, but probably only a medium+ when compared with other HI khukuries. It is a good place to start. Later on you can decide whether it's going to be the largest, or smallest HI khukuri in your collection.

Looks like this... (the blades are highly polished - the texture in this photo is from a protective coat of light oil)

Hello and welcome!

The AK's are my favorite khukuris. They have the heavyest and widest blade. The sirupati and kobra's are thinner/lighter and will make for a great macheti(sp?) replacement. Think about what you will be using them for and go from there. I like to use my 15 inch ak the most it will do anything and is easy to carry!:)

Hello Brendan and welcome to the Cantina :)

Their all FINE blades -hard to choose. Since you'll probably want to take your first khukuri along with you everywhere(?), get one that you can comfortably carry. May I suggest an good all around, such as a 16" WWII or an BAS.

18" AK for chopping; replaces axe, hatchet, saw, hammer, wedge, prybar, adze, chisel, rasp and tomahawk. Ideal for lopping and felling timber, splitting firewood and beheading small to medium dragons.

20" sirupati for everything else; will also lop, fell and split wood, but you need to hit harder and more often.

18" GS (Gelbu Special); good compromise between the AK and the sirupati. If you're really *really* only gonna have one, the GS is probably the one to choose.

For excellence of ergonomic design and sheer sexiness, the YCS is hard to beat.

Or, as the RCBS folks used to say; "Might as well start off with what you'll end up with", and go for the ultimate do-it-all superkhuk, the 25" Kobra. But then you'd miss out on all the fun of owning and using a dozen or so other HI models along the way...

Just a year ago or so. I have (or had) an BGRS, an 18in Sirupati, an 20in AK, an 15in AK, a BAS, and an 21in Dui Chirra Chitlangi. The only ones I no longer have where given as special gifts to my brother and two cherished friends. They are all special and you can't lose. An 18in AK would probably be the best choice for all around utility, especailly if weight is not a major issue. I like my 15 and 20 inch AKs but I think I would be best suited by an 18 inch myself. Something else on the list......

welcome to the affliction we call HIKV!:D

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to give me advice, I really sense a feel of understanding between Khuk nuts and would like to know how the handle material affects performance, grip, durability etc. I want to order my first HI Khuk tomorrow and now is the time to decide using all your experience as a base of knowledge.

WWII 18inch or 18inch AK !! are my decided khuks.

Is Sher the best AK maker and is wood or horn a better handle option ?

   :)

Brendan,

You are not going to go wrong with those choices. Wood versus horn is a matter of personal preference, and either model would make an excellent first khukuri. Just pick one and expect to come back in a few weeks for the other. :)

Thanks for all the advice, I have made my decision and its probably a big mistake (HIKV).

18 inch AK, made by Sher (Brave Tiger), horn handle !!!

The funny thing is that I have already decided on my next Khuk - WWII 18 inch.

Uncle Bill, I will e-mail you my order.

Brendan:eek:

None are a mistake. You just become aware of a need for one that does something else better.

Brendan,

It is too late for us, but you can still save yourself from HIKV. Soon you will up at 3.00am looking for Uncle Bill's PGAs and mentally dividing your paychecks into possible number of khukuris.

RUN!!!!!
