OK, this might not be the best place to ask this question but I need opinions from the experts and you guys have proven yourselves to me.

The after christmas knife buy is coming up really soon and I am very torn. This will be my almost exclusive EDC, I usually go about 2 years on an EDC ( every other year I buy a fixed blade collector peice).

OK, here it is, the two contenders for my pocket space........

Spyderco Manix orrrrrr.........

Emerson________. (tonto point, 8-9 in. length.)

HELP ME!!!!!

Here is where you are...

Well, between your two choices, the Manix has the superior opening method, superior lock, and more useful blade shape.

Pretty much the only thing the Emerson has over the Manix is a Wave if it's got one.

Oh yeah--the Manix will have better steel too.

Yea the steel really has me. I kinda always went with linerlocks, but I still remember that first Buck 110. The sweet sound of that sure lockup.

My biggest problem is I have nowhere to get my hand on either, Internet all the way for me. I really want to feel the heft of the two. My only experience with a spyderco is with my cousins Police. and thats apples to oranges.

Not to start a flame war, but all of my previous Emersons just weren't up to the monotony of EDC duty. (And Emerson fans will correctly respond that they're not meant to.)

The wave feature is cool, but the oddly ground edges, while functional in certain capacities just don't lend themselves to EDC work all that well. IMHO, anyway.

A 40-dollar "Wal-Mart" Native will out-EDC any Emerson folder with ease, anyday. Try opening mail with a thick, chisel ground CQC-7 and then pick up any double ground Spyderco and do the same task. Opening boxes, peeling fruit, cutting rope, whatever you use your knife for, the Spyderco will outperform the decidely more "tactically minded" Emerson. The tables begin to turn when the EDC tasks at hand are 'necessary' prying or thrusting into tough material. That's where the Emersons will pull away from the Spydercos.

Not all "cool" looking "tactical" folders are good at pulling double duty.

Again, my personal opinion only, but I would not EDC an Emerson as a primary task master. Nice, purpose built knives, but for those of us that aren't "extreme individuals" (whatever that means) there are plenty of more complete options. Most of Spyderco's product line included.

BTW, I'm EDC'ing my WalMart Native today. Can't put the thing down....

I'm in the same boots as you.

I'm going with spyderco. I did handle the manix and its one solid knife. It cannot be beaten for the price. I also handled some Emersons, and while they are nice knives, I just don't have any use for the tanto shape. Plus, I'm weary of linerlocks no matter who makes them.

Go with spyderco.

Thanks for the responses, yea, I guess it'll be the Spyderco for me. I've always liked alot of their knives but two of my personal "must haves" are dual metal liners and G-10 scales. Kinda limits their product line for me. The Manix fits the bill about perfectly, now onto the other debate.... full sized or 80mm.

The Manix is great. I have one on order, I just decided to hold off until after the holidays...
You should've posted this elsewhere so I could tell you why you should buy an Emerson without feeling guilty that I'm posting in the Spyderco forum... :foot: ;) :D

Peace.
