I doubt you could tell the difference between properly tempered 440C and 154CM.
What is your complaint about 440?

Call any of the knifemaker supply houses and they'll sell you small lots of barstock, and I never heard of a $1500.00 miniumum order from Crucible for S30V. Are you talking to Bruce DiVita, 1-800-365-1168?

Matt, Did you check with Admiral? I bought a piece of ats 34 from them about 6 years ago, 1/4 X 4 X 36. I think for around $150.00. I'm sure prices have gone up since then but might be worth checking.

i get my stuff from crucible didnt have a min order
i am planning on buying a sheet of 3/32 cpm154 it will cost me a few $$$ but im goingto sell off some to help lessen the blow
also how much 3/16 cpm154 are you thinking you need i have some in the shop maybe i can help you

Mike the 154 & Ats are much higher temp steels right ?
i believe they both temper around 800 or so correct ? 440 tempers aroung 400 degree,
i never said that Crucible had a minimum im looking at 3/16 thick 6 inch wide bars. Both Admiral and crucible are around $ 200.00 for a 3 footer and i need enough steel to build 6 17 1/2 inch long knives and am cutting D guard's from the sheet to get a 1 piece knife / guard . the outside of the guard is just under 6 inched wide . i was hoping someone had a secret place they were willing to share for some "Large" pieces of steel . i will spend the dough if i need to but id like to check a couple other places first .

Butcher Block Thank's if ya got something send me a P.M

ooo 6x18x3/16 sorry i dont have that kind of chunk and its too bad i dont because i have an up comming order for a D gaurd trench knife in cpm3v

Most knifemakers temper 154CM and ATS-34 at 400-500 F. If you are making a chopper [machete, bolo, kukri] even 440B would work well .

Your problem is wanting exotic material (compared to what most shops use) in a 6" width. Most high end stainless is sold in bar stock that is 2" wide or less. Special orders cost more.

Your original post in this thread in part said "im not trying to sacrifice quality here and won't use 440" .................................

Just kind of made 440(C?) look cheap, quality wise by comparison. It's of course nothing of the sort.
Some people temper ATS and 154 at higher temps(some don't), but what does that have to do, or say about quality of steel? Nothing!!

440C is tempered at a lesser degree but so is 01, 52100, 1095, and the list goes on. I just don't understand the correlation of tempering temps versus quality.
