Well, I don't know what I did wrong but I left my 2 in a 75% white vinegar, 25% water solution for about 2 hours and when I took it out, the were some really nasty rust spots on my blade!!!

I panicked and sprayed rust remover on it and that got just about all of it of (red rust) but left the blade all blotchy!

Any idea on how I can get rid of these spots because it doesn't look very good!

Thanks.

Flitz or number 7 compound. Flitz is better. Fine sandpaper works too

Yeah its hard to tell you what to do without seeing it.

Your wish is my command!

Eh, its rust. You put it in a compound designed to make it oxidize. No big, though, just sand it out with some 600 gt wet/dry, start again.

You will see rust on your blade when you patina. You need to use baking soda once you are done, to stop the reaction, or it will continue, unbeknownst to you.

A little sanding and you can totally remove the forced patina...and then try it again. yep been down that road ;) I have been using mustard for a kinda cool look.

Thanks bro! Didn't know that about the baking soda!!

The weird thing is, I've never had this happen to me before, I bet I left it in the mixture too long...

I'm hitting it up with some steel wool right now and it seems ok.

Will post picks in a second.

Krylon works good to remove the stains :)

After I wash it off, I just dust it with baking soda. You will see where the acids are left, because the bubble. Then I wash again, and I'm done.

You put your carbon steel blade in acid (vinegar).

Vinegar acidity from low to high: rice, champagne, red wine, apple cider, white.

A patina is forcing an oxidizing (rusting) reaction on the surface of the metal. Then you neutralize the reaction (water / baking soda) and oil the blade creating a more rust resistant surface than bare steel.

Heat and strength of acid will both affect the speed of the reaction.

Yeah, thanks but like I said, I've done this a ton of time and it's the first times it's happened to me. ;)
