I have an interest in what has happened (and continues to happen) in Japan, because my work involves people and companies there, many friends and co-workers live there, my wife is Japanese, and her relatives are there.

Anyway, I am interested in selling one of my Busse Combat knives, and 100% of the proceeds will be donated to the America Red Cross for Japan relief efforts. In addition, my employer (Adobe Systems) is offering a 2-for-1 match for employee donations, meaning that the amount donated will be tripled.

I can do this one of two ways. One way is to simply put up a knife for sale at a specific price, and it is treated like a usual sale, except that the entire amount is donated. The other way is to do it auction style, and the highest bidder gets the knife, and the entire funds, whatever it ends up reaching, will be donated.

I haven't decided which knife to sell for this purpose, so this thread cannot be construed as a sale thread, because no specific knife is mentioned.

Thoughts? I am particularly interested in what Moderators think, and whether they have a preference as to whether it should simply be a sale, or do it auction-style.

Thanks...

Does Adobe limit the amount of your donation (match)?

Since it is my intent to donate to Japan anyways, sending you funds via PP to combine with your donation would definitely maximize the impact.
Would this be OK?

lunde, since we generally do not allow auctions, we need Spark himself to specifically approve this one.

Adobe limits the match to $5000 per employee per year, meaning that a $2500 donation from this would maximize the 2-for-1 match from Adobe, to result in a $7500 donation.

I don't like mentioning auctions on the site. I really don't like using the forums software for it. You and I have a rapport going back a few years but if I allowed you to do it, I'd have to let everyone do it. I hate to send you to ebay because they'll take what, 10% of it?

A Raffle? 20 $50 tickets for a $500 knife. 1 post anouncing it and take it offline via email.

I'd definately throw in for that. I wouldn't be able to help with an an Auction or Buy it outright but a 1 in 20 chance to win would be cool.

Just a thought.

I gave this some thought, and while I appreciate the suggestion to do this as a raffle, I will respect Spark's wishes and do this as an outright sale whose proceeds will be donated. I will do this over the weekend.

But, I will be doing similar things on two other forums for two additional knives, and may be able to run those either as an auction or raffle, depending on their rules. I won't mention the names of the other forums here, because it doesn't seem appropriate to do so.

That happened in japan was so cruel .. I feel sorry for all the people who died in the tsunami disaster
