Hi everybody, :D

I`ve 2 folders in my collection that seemed to be from the same collectors series and are marked with 1 of 600.
But when I had a closer look I discovered only 1 of them beeing marked with Bertram Cutlery.
One is "The Gambler" and the other is "Hound Dog Hunter". Both of them marked as 1 of 600.
"The Gambler" is a hidden lock folder which can be closed by moving the bolsters, very well and secure made! (Length opened ~ 22,5 cm or 8.86 inches, blade length tip to bolsters ~ 10,3 cm or ~ 4 inches).
Besides the writings "The Gambler" and 1 OF 600, there is the hen + rooster logo, Rostfrei Solingen at the one side of the ricasso and at the other side U.S. PAT. 4173068

The "Hound Dog Hunter" is a mid lock folder with a swing guard and a pretty big folder as well! (Length opened ~ 24,5 cm or 9.65 inches, blade length tip to swing guard ~ 10,5 cm or 4.1 inches) !
Besides the writings Hound Dog Hunter and 1of600 there`s the hen + rooster logo and Solingen Germany at the one side of the ricasso and Bertram Cutlery Rostfrei at the other.

Have a look, please.

Does anybody know if there`s any difference between these collectors series beside the adding of Bertram Cutlery to the blade? Or are they quite different animals?
Seems the Bertram is from the 80`s when A.G. Russell had sold it to Klaas Company?

Any info is much appreciated!

Thanks for looking.

Regards,

Wolfgang

I did not sell the company. The state took it and sold the trademark to Jim Frost and the land and building to a church.

Both of those knives were made by Klaas or Boker, more likly Klaas. After 1980.

The quality of course is far below that of the original company, good knives, just not GREAT. The loss of the original Bertram and their workmen was a real loss to the knife world. If the knives were still made in the old way they would cost $150-350 so enjoy what frost is doing or but the old knives at hundreds of dollars.

Thanks a lot for answering to my question, Mr. Russell!

The knives are pretty well made and I like them. I payed about the price range you mentioned, for each of them. ;) :D

I think that they can be bought in this country for much less. The prices I mentiond was for the original knives made before the summer of 1980. For currant prices on currant knives try this: http://www.eknifeworks.com/webapp/eCommerce/prodlist.jsp?A=&range=311&Brand=52&Mode=Brand

and find Hen & Rooster

I have the hound dog hunter, it was a wedding present from my wife... I think she paid about $60.00 ( or $80.00) for it back in 1988 from Smoky Mtn.

Back then H&R made many different patterns in Stag with frosted blades, I remember flipping through the catalog and not being able to make up my mind.

The quality of my knife is very good and is noticeably better than a few H&R's I bought over the last year. In 1988 I didn't own anything that even came close to the quality of that knife ( except for a Case Lock-back)

Although I bought a new H&R "cattle knife" in stag, it's also very nice, but not quite a good as the older hound dog.

I collect traditional knives made in Germany....
