Anyone have / use one of these ? I am trying to decide on velcro bottom entry or side zipper.

I just got one of these and used it for the first time on a four day trip in the White Mountains. Mine is the Hennessy Expedition Asym with the velcro bottom entry. I loved using this thing! Far more comfortable than any tent, easy to set up and take down, and super compact.

The advantage of the zip version is that you can lie in it like a conventional hammock with the bug net retracted. You can also lie in the bottom entry version like this if you fold it a certain way. Also, it would be easier to arrange your sleeping gear in the zip version before you climb in. The disadvantage of the zip version, as I see it, is a potential point of failure if the zipper breaks.

I did not mind using the bottom entry and appreciated its simplicity. If you really can't decide, get the bottom entry and if you don't like it, have someone add the zipper. There are various folks on Hammock Forums who do this mod for people.

If you are going to use it in cold weather with the undercover the zipper version is easier when it is cold otherwise the bottom entry is really slick. We have used both and find them equally usable. With sleeping gear the side entry is easier.

The only thing you must do is get the bigger "HEX" rain fly. This is not an option you should do without and if you buy it with the hammock when new it is a minimal cost (it comes standard on the safari deluxe if I remember right.)

Wow, that really is quite the hammock. :)

Are these Hennesseys similar to regular hammocks in that you're limited to sleeping on your back?

The Asym cut allows you to lie relatively flat. I use a sleeping mat in mine, and I'm able to lie on my side.
Here's mine, a Explorer Ultralight Zip with the aforementioned, upsized hex fly.
FYI, there's a similar thread going in Outdoor Gear right now: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/865215-Hennessy-Hammock

If you hang it with just the right tension and then lie diagonally, you can lie flat and you can lie comfortably on either side. For bottom insulation on my first outing with mine, I used one of those car windshield sun reflectors, which worked very well.

I have the regular (included) rain fly, which is adequate, but I'd like to upgrade to the large fly like Guyon for some extra sheltered outside space.
