Henry survival 22.......reliable?

My friend has one of these. It's the only gun I've ever shot so I can't tell you much though. It jammed up a lot and we kept having to drop the mag and clear the chamber. This was with Winchester ammo. It was also too small to hold comfortably, IMO. The gun was oiled and everything so I don't think it was a maintainance issue, but I was not impressed.

In short: no, yes, and no. All .22s are picky with ammo, in my experience. However, if you definitely need a take-down survival .22, the Henry is cheap, reasonably reliable, and reasonably accurate (although 75 yards is pushing it), and it is certainly better than the old AR-7. The sights are so-so, and the stock is plastic, and it takes longer to put together than they make it sound, but the rifle is very light and certainly better than nothing. However, if you can possibly use a full-length rifle instead, virtually anything is better than the Henry. I'm partial to the CZ 452 myself. I have a bunch of .22s and any one of them (including the handguns) will outshoot the Henry.

based on your responses, i think i'll pass on it.

thanks for saving me some money!! ;)

Shot a friend's Springfield M6 last night, it took everything we put through it from CBs to Stingers, doesn't do .22 magnums though. It's a .22/.410 over/under takedown & really quite a nice little piece. Can't say I've even held an AR-7 so can't compare the 2 but the M-6 is sweet.

Here's a good link that'll fill you in on the M6 if you're interested - www.oldjimbo.com/survival/v-shrake/m6.html

I had the Charter Arms model. It was a piece of junk. If you want a take down .22 go with the Marlin Papoose.

Exactly my experiance. The Charter I had would jam with any ammo, clean, lubed, not lubed, whatever.

I've had a papoose for a year and a half now, and I love that little rifle. Reliable, way more accurite than I thought it would be. takes down into a small case that floats.

From what I've heard about Henrys, buy a Marlin instead. I've heard that all Henrys are good for is to put in a display case, and even then you can buy a nicer rifle, and still use it, and put in the display case, and have it look better than the Henry that you haven't fired yet.

Another vote for the M6. Especially the .22 Hornet / .410, buy a few MCA cartridge adapters and it's a .22 rimfire.

None of the AR-7 rifles (including the Armalite) are reliable enough in my experience to consider as a "survival" firearm.

Might consider a Chipmunk in .22 Magnum, 2.5 pounds and almost bulletproof. You can get used to the short stock and it packs easy. The laminated stock in stainless would be my choice.

dont know personally of the henry but the charter AR7 is junk, not accurate, not reliable, not much of anything imho. and also imho butt ugly FWIW. it also would be lucky to hit a barn at 75 ft much less yards lol, seriously it had horrible sights with a funky cheap way of adjusting them (the peep would slide up/down/side/side and ya tightened a screw down to adjust, no scale/etc) and i would say it was good only to maybe 25 or 30 yards, for smaller targets anyway (ie like a beer can) might be better with a scope though.

i have heard the henrys are "iffy" some ok/some not.

i would go with something else myself.

Do they still make the M6?

Seems like a nice versitile little package.

Looks like it's been redesigned & the older style, the one in the link I posted, has been discontinued, that said I'm sure you'd be able to find used or new-old stock for sale without too much trouble.
