I just finished this up for a customer. Let me know what you think?

More pics and specs can be seen on my website in the gallery section at http://cgknives.blademakers.com
Thanks for looking,

I know Don was away in FL for the holidays, but, in my best Ricky Ricardo voice, when he gets back, there's going to be some splainin' to do... :)

Of course I know you and Don are friends and I'm sure this knife is something Don is aware of, he may have even helped you with it, but its a very nice attept at this Sunfish pattern made popular in the custom knife wold by Don.

Actually this is not the first sunfish pattern that I have made so there was no help from Don. Although Don is not aware of it, I have to thank him for the influence and inspiration that he and his knives have given me. He will always be the true sunfish master.

Thanks,
Chuck

I think it's a nice rendition of a classic pattern. Congrats on fine work.

Very nice knife Chuck. I really like the damascus pattern and that's some really gorgeous mammoth ivory as well. For some reason, sunfish pattern folders always make me smile. If there is such a thing as a "friendly"-looking knife, this surely is it. :)

Um, with all due respect to all parties involved, this pattern is about 100+ years old! and was originally popularized by Case, Napanoch, Marbles, and misc. Sheffield makers.

Custom folder makers have been making "elephants toenail" or sunfish patterns since the early 80's, or thats at least what I can see from reading 20+ years of KNIVES annuals....no maker has the exclusive rights to the sunfish style, or mosaic damascus, for that matter, and as far as I can tell, to suggest that would be naive, if that is what you are suggesting?

When I think of custom Sunfish knives, I immediately think of RC Knipstein who has been showing revamped Sunfish patterns like this for over a decade, although usually in more traditional fittings.

Anthony, while I am aware that this is an old pattern, and of course, as Don uses it, with his own flair of course, Chuck is free to do so as well, what struck me was how much this particular Sunfish pattern auto reminded me of one of Don's Sunfish autos, and, as Chuck pointed out, Don is one of the few who makes them into liner lock autos, and I would add, also one of the few who uses high-end fossil ivory and complex mosaic damascus. Even the damascus on Chuck's blade, if not by Hanson is Hansonish.

So, while yes, this is indeed an old pattern, the Don Hanson influence on Chuck's rendition, which Chuck readily admits is there, is what struck me, maybe I should have been more clear though to not come across as suggesting Don has exclusive rights to this basic pattern or that I was being serious about Chuck needing to explain anything, which is why I made my comment humorous, though I guess maybe not everybody likes I love Lucy as much as I did. :)
