Here is an idea I haven't seen before

I kind of want one of these - but I'd like a stronger handle - these look toyish.

"Israeli designers Ami Drach and Dov Ganchrow presented their modern stone and flint tools at the Budapest Design Week. The pair combined hand-chipped blades and axes with modern high-impact plastic handles, to make tools that are beautiful and functional. I'd love to have one of those knives around the office. Designboom has more pics, and commentary:

the set is a result of an experimental exploration of the realm of tool making. where stone and flint tools have been the means of our ancestors' survival for over a million years, they magnify our bodily (teeth, fingernails, fists etc.) capabilities of cutting and chopping, sawing and pounding. through a method of three-dimensionally scanning and printing, the ancient artifacts are digitally outfitted with custom-designed handles, encapsulating the rugged forms in a perfectly enclosed case. by juxtaposing the polarities of the manufacturing processes in computer generated forms, an intersection of material technologies and functionality coincide on a tangible scale."

I would have thought they would at least go for a wooden handle.....I am pretty sure they did not have plastics in the days of using flint tools!

I'll have to take some time to wrap my brain around these. Seeing the modern handles on ancient style blades is pretty jarring. On the other hand, it could be looked upon as a cool combination of new tech with ancient. Just not sure how I feel about these yet. Thanks for posting them, though.

It's kind of cool, in a bent kind of way. Artists like to do these "when two worlds collide" things, only they use words like "juxtapose", "dialogue", and "contrast", instead of just saying, "hey this is the odd sense of humor we have, and we're going to do this, mainly just for the sheer hell of it".

Hah! I want to see the stiletto, and a switchblade!

My local sporting goods store actually sells some of these, with a more robust handle, which are handmade by someone that lives in my area.

Now I would have liked for it to be possible to change the "blade" if it chipped off too much or broke, that happens with stone tools. Fitting the handles to only 1 exact piece of rock seems..risky :P But I love the idea!

That's funny--as an art concept I love it! I think it'd actually be pretty interesting if they had a master knapper make some blades, then scan them with a 3D scanner and machine facsimiles from steel THEN mount them in polymer fittings. :D
