Well first off let me apologise for all the bizzarre questions I've been asking lately, as I've stated in one of my other posts, My next knife purchase will be my last for a while...(as per the wife) I'm looking for a small to medium size belt knife for hiking/camping related chores ie: basic cutting of fabric or rope, food prep, small game/fish processing, and light whittling. I'm looking for something stainless, I know, I know.......possibly a convex grind, and between 2&1/2 and 4 inches in blade length with 3 being optimum. any opinions are appreciated

1) BRKT mini skinner
2) BRKT mini northstar (if I can find one)
3) fallkniven sporter
4) benchmade outbounder (if one can still be had in 440-c)
5) entrek Badger
6)falkniven f-1

Well those are the choices... Thanks for baring with me, after this next purchase My brand specific questions should be over, and the warmer weather means I'll be getting out more so my posts should be more Bush related. THanks everbody.

thanks for the help so far...Pit, That's the cheapest I've seen it yet, Good looking out bro.

rr- those are some very good choices...

the fallkniven f-1 is a great all around knife.... i love mine.... it is wicked sharp....

i think www.dlttradingcompany.com still has a few mini-northstars... i've wanted a mini-nortshar for a long time now....:o

I agree with mtnfolk mike. I'm pretty sure that the F1 will be my next knife.

From the photo, the Entrek doesn't appear to be convex ground.

The entrek is 3/16" thick hollow ground 440C with nice grippy micarta handles. Of the ones you have listed, the Badger and F1 would be my choices. I own both and can heartily recommend them both.

I would get the Fällkniven F1. If you're not the kind of guy that cares too much for aesthetics on user blades, then get the F1BL with black coating. That one is so corrosion-resistant it's practically stainless, even when used in and around salt water. The coating will wear in use, and the blade will look used, but if you don't mind that, it's the best thing since sliced bread.

F1, or Master Hunter in Aus-8 :D

Ditto. Although the CS Master Hunter isn't convex. And mine is of the carbon steel variety, not stainless. It is my personal favorite, however. I use my MH way more than my F1. I really like my F1, don't get me wrong there. It's just a personal preference.

All of this talk about the Falkniven F1 has gotten me interested in it and in getting a medium sized fixed blade in general (maybe I just ought to try a Mora and stop abusing my wallet).

Forgive the hijack, but if you're interested, I just wanted to share my first experience sharpening a convex blade on my BR Mini Canadian. I've always been a poor sharpener, but the convex was a piece of cake! A few stropping-style swipes on some 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper backed with cardboard brought it right back after I had dinged it against a stone hearth. I have never sharpened a knife so easily or well!

I forgot to add one ...spyderco moran.. I also noticed te f=1 is available n laminated or solid vg-10 is there an advantage to one over the other?? unles there is a specific advantage to a laminated steel than I'd probably go with the solid, any thoughts? It's hard to dispute the popularity of the f-1, pobably end up going that way, for the guys that own one..is it easy to keep sharp through stropping, and relatively easy to resharpen when neglected for a little bit? THanks for everything so far....

I would go with a full size BRKT Northstar. It's a VERY light knife with maple burl or bamboo scales. It's among the best I've seen for a general purpose camp knife.

The Moran is a sweet knife too, my father's favorite infact, but I'm not as impressed with them as I used to be when they had a full convex grind and a leather sheath.

Not as impressed with the 440-C stuff, and especially not the Entreks. Too wide of a blade for my tastes, and I'm not a fan of the hollow grinds.

You can see a pic of my own Northstar in the line up here:

(It's in the second group photo)

what happened to the Helle's you were kicking around?

I would guess the Moran only has a partial Tang the same as my Temperance !!!
I too would choose a solid steel over a laminated blade !

If done correctly, a laminated blade is notably stronger than a solid one. Fällkniven themselves quote a 20 % strength advantage for the laminated VG-10. You can take it with a grain of salt if you wish, but in my experience the laminated blade certainly isn't any worse than the solid VG-10 one.

The laminated will sharpen easier but the blade will scratch easier also. I like the Moran and I feel it will handle what you have planed for it.
I do not own one but I have heard it is very well balanced, comes with a kydex sheath all for one easy payment of......
