Here we go again (spike canes)

I got confirmation from the ATF that the spike/muzzleloader canes were in fact classified as "Any Other Weapon" and therefore illegal unless registered. I was pretty sure they would be and of course I never made any

I was working on another project that does an end run around Va's no concealed firearms in restaurants ban using air, so I decided to merge the two projects. In other words a large bore air cane with a spike handle. Virginia also exempts pneumatic weapons from it's concealed weapons laws....(No permit needed)

Easy enough to say..... It's about 9:30 AM and I've spent the last 9 or 10 hours studying large bore hunting airgun design. Some have darn impressive ballistics and people have used them on deer in the 50 cal class.

I have a lot to do today but tonight, I need to build a spike dagger that will engage the valve trigger that I haven't built yet. I like for it to fire when the dagger is twisted. That way the dagger can be pulled out in one motion.

Hanover County, George. You have to bring relish if you come over. :D

If your wondering about the whole project, Some of the Taser patents have run out and some more are going to expire soon. I am working on a system that eliminates some of the problems with the current Air Tasers by launching the entire power plant tipped with short coils of wire and barbed tips.

In other words, it fires the entire unit and the wire doesn't deploy until it hits the target.
This could be a real plus for people who want non-lethal protection at an affordable cost. It would also be minus the taggants that Taser currently uses to offset liability. That's one of the reasons the original Taser company went bust. Everyone kept suing them. :barf:
That's going to be a several years R&D project while all the applicable patents expire.

Don, you gotta show a lot of pics of this one when you get it done. I'd like to see how the mech works.

I will Tracy. As usual, what I want to do is the hardest way to do it. The high pressure systems (2000-3000 PSI) use a valve that is held in place by light spring pressure and the pressure from the expansion chamber from the inside. They are triggered by a spring loaded hammer that strikes the protruding pin of the valve and allows air to escape through an exhaust circuit. (Short description)

Since the air chamber on this is linear, there has to be a tunnel inside it for the dagger to go and a cam on the bottom that will push the pin when it's twisted. This of course makes this a one shot affair but the cane is really just a novelty item anyway. The real and long term use is in my last post.

Peter and all,
The valve you are describing is called a up stream valve, in scuba at least. If you could share your design of the "large bore hunting airgun design" I would really like to see it!!
Thanks, Lynn

I will Lynn. I need to get a prototype up and running first.
A lot of the design came from Quackenbush who seems to be building the better big bores around. He's also decent enough to share a lot of his design work on the INTERNET.

He does some neat Mods to the Crossman 2240 pistols. One fellow is reporting 680 fps from a 14" barrel in 22 cal. using 12G CO2.

What about using coil technology? It is, of course, undeveloped but it might solve some problems of barrel weight and legal issues. Not to mention the safety issue of carrying around the amount of compressed gasses you'd need to make it work. I'm not famillair with all of the laws, but I know that some states don't specifically outlaw spring or elastic band powered weapons. If you built it like a spear-gun it would deffinatley have the power needed, and you could probably build the barrel out of graphite, or something, to reduce the weight.
just my two cents.

Actually Chris, Va does consider a spring gun to be a no no. You can't even carry them with a CCW. You can openly carry just about anything but if it is disguised to look like something else, it's concealed. Besides, this has more power and is a lot more fun to build. :D

have you seen the co2 adapters for blowguns? here is one on this page:
I made one of those years ago, out of a bicycle tire inflater. Lots of fun but the darts go so deep in the wood you bend half of them pulling them out!

Duh!!! Did you ever try hardening the darts???  Don, did you ever get any of my relish????

The darts are hard George, But they are only about 1/8" in diameter. Nope, just heard stories about it.
