hey folks <nods>.

When did the BAS type, or SN1 become issue to the RGR?

did it replace the WWII version, or was there an intermediary khuk on general issue?

Who is the SN1 actually made by? - there are lots of copies around, the HI BAS, or that Tora for example.

Has anyone ever reviewed a genuine issue khuk? really i'd like to know why ghurkas are romoured to buy their own a lot of the time.

can anyone point me towards any information to do with this stuff, i'd really appreciate it :)

Hello there, The Current British Service issue, is an 11" blade and 5" horn handled kukri not the 10.25-10.5" bladed type you often see on the net, that type has not been issued for quite a while now.

It is true that some Gurkhas will use a their own one when in the field, often of a larger Sirupate type. The main reason is the extra length, and the reason behind the use of the Sirupate is because of the Nepali 1/2" stock the Sirupate still remains usable even at 13-15" in bade length. The reason why the stock tends to be so thick in Nepal is that most kami can not succesfully make them in 1/4 inch stock, which is in my (Tora) opinion a better stock. The most popular type in the UK are the 12.5"-13.5" WWI and WWII models with 1/4" stock, as they tend to have the best aspects of both Western and Eastern style Nepali kukri, which is why in the past the British Army (Indian Army) used to have them made like that.

Having said all that most Gurkhas still use their Service issue in the field, and is issued as it is a cheap kukri for the MOD in the UK to have issued. This is a shame as the WWII models are generally much better for survival and combat.

The HI FAQ chapter by JP on "Traditional Khukruris" speaks only in passing to military issue and referes to chapter on "Miliary." But the chapter does not seem to be on the site. Help?
